Chapter 2: Every Lie Falls Apart

Margaret suddenly dropped to her knees.
"It wasn't like that!"
"The camera doesn't show everything!"
"I was emotional!"
The detective calmly stopped the recording.
"It shows enough."
He turned toward Mia.
The little girl stood quietly beside Julia, still wearing her stained dress.
"Sweetheart," he asked gently.
"Did your grandmother push you?"
Mia hesitated.
She looked at Julia.
Julia squeezed her hand.
"You only tell the truth."
Nothing else."
Mia nodded.
"She said I was garbage."
Several guests covered their mouths.
"And then..."
The little girl's voice trembled.
"Grandma pushed me because she said I ruined everything."
Silence.
One elderly guest slowly stood.
Then another.
One after another, relatives who had watched in silence finally began speaking.
"I've seen Margaret bully that child before."
"So have I."
"David always defended his mother."
"This wasn't the first time."
Even David's own uncle stepped forward.
"I warned your father years ago that Margaret would destroy this family."
Margaret looked around desperately.
No one defended her.
Not one person.
The detective informed both Margaret and David that statements would be taken regarding the assaults.
David reached for Julia.
"Please..."
"I made a mistake."
Julia stepped back.
"No."
"You made a choice."
"You looked at your terrified daughter..."
"And protected the person who hurt her."
David's shoulders collapsed.
For the first time, he realized there was nothing left to save.
Julia knelt in front of Mia.
"Do you want to go home?"
Mia quietly shook her head.
"I don't want to go where Daddy is."
Julia hugged her tightly.
"You never will again."
