Chapter 6 - THE FILE GERTRUDE TRIED TO BURN

Damian reached the family office before the second page had fully caught fire.

He shoved open the library door.

Gertrude spun around.

For one second, mother and son simply stared at each other across the room.

The fireplace crackled behind her.

A corner of the folder was already black.

"Move away from the fire," Damian said.

Gertrude clutched the remaining papers against her chest.

"You frightened me."

"Put the folder down."

"These are private family documents."

"They are in my office."

"Your father created this office."

"My father has been dead twelve years."

Gertrude's face tightened.

"And you have forgotten everything he taught you about family loyalty."

Damian stepped closer.

"Family loyalty does not include destroying evidence."

Her eyes flashed.

"Evidence of what?"

"You tell me."

She looked toward the fire.

That was all Damian needed.

He crossed the room, grabbed the brass poker, and pulled the burning pages away from the flames.

Gertrude rushed forward.

"Stop!"

Damian blocked her with one arm.

"Do not touch them."

"You have no right."

"If those papers relate to forged bank authorizations, I have every right."

Gertrude's expression shifted from outrage to fear.

Only for a heartbeat.

But he saw it.

Damian stamped out the embers on the stone hearth.

Most of the top page was ruined.

The second page was scorched along one edge.

The third was almost intact.

He lifted it carefully.

A bank logo appeared at the top.

Beneath it was the phrase PERSONAL GUARANTY AND CREDIT FACILITY.

The borrower was BGR Holdings.

The guarantor was Damian O'Connor.

The facility amount was three million two hundred thousand dollars.

Damian's pulse slowed in the dangerous way it always did when he was furious.

"What is this?"

Gertrude said nothing.

"Mother."

"It was temporary."

He looked up.

"What was temporary?"

"Brenda needed liquidity during the divorce."

Damian stared at the document.

"I never guaranteed Brenda's company."

Gertrude pressed her lips together.

"You would have if we had asked."

He slowly raised his head.

"That is your defense?"

"She was being attacked by that man."

"Her ex-husband?"

"He was trying to take everything."

"So you forged my name on a three-point-two-million-dollar credit line?"

"I did not forge anything."

"Then who signed it?"

Gertrude looked away.

Damian stepped closer.

"Who signed it?"

"The family office handled the paperwork."

"Who?"

"I don't remember."

"You remember enough to burn the file."

Gertrude's face hardened.

"Do not speak to me as though I am one of your employees."

"My employees answer questions when millions of dollars disappear."

The insult landed.

Gertrude's cheeks flushed.

"You are choosing Fiona over your own mother."

Damian almost laughed.

"This is not about choosing Fiona."

"Of course it is."

"No."

He held up the scorched guaranty.

"This is about whether my mother and sister used my name to borrow millions without my permission."

Gertrude's eyes turned cold.

"You have more money than you could spend in ten lifetimes."

There it was.

The same assumption he had heard from people for years.

If Damian had enough, then taking from him did not feel like theft.

"That does not make it yours," he said.

Gertrude folded her arms.

"Brenda is your sister."

"And Fiona is my wife."

"Fiona has changed you."

Damian stared at her.

"No."

His voice dropped.

"Fiona stayed the same."

He looked toward the burned papers.

"I'm finally looking at the rest of you clearly."

Gertrude flinched.

Footsteps sounded in the library.

Brenda appeared in the doorway.

She was fully dressed now.

Not in pajamas.

Not surprised.

Damian noticed both things.

"What's going on?" she asked.

He held up the guaranty.

Brenda stopped breathing for a second.

"Where did you get that?"

Damian looked at his mother.

Gertrude closed her eyes.

Brenda realized her mistake.

"I mean, what is it?"

"Too late."

Damian walked toward her.

"You know exactly what it is."

"I have no idea."

"BGR Holdings."

Brenda's face hardened.

"My attorney created that company during the divorce."

"And borrowed three point two million dollars with my guarantee."

"I didn't know you were the guarantor."

"Liar."

The word came out before Damian could temper it.

Brenda recoiled.

Gertrude stepped forward.

"Do not speak to your sister like that."

Damian turned on her.

"Then stop giving me reasons to."

Silence.

Brenda recovered first.

"If your signature was used, it was probably an administrative error."

"An administrative error does not create a notarized personal guaranty."

"Then ask the family-office director."

"I will."

"Good."

Brenda lifted her chin.

"Because I did nothing wrong."

Damian looked at the fire.

"Then why was Mother burning the file?"

Brenda's confidence cracked.

She looked at Gertrude.

"You were what?"

Gertrude said nothing.

Damian studied them.

For the first time, he wondered whether Brenda knew less than Gertrude.

That possibility was almost worse.

He took the surviving papers to his study and locked them in the safe.

Then he called Evelyn.

She answered immediately.

"You found something."

"Three-point-two-million-dollar credit facility to Brenda's shell company."

"Guaranteed by whom?"

"Me."

Evelyn went quiet.

"Did you sign it?"

"No."

"Do not confront anyone else."

"Too late."

Evelyn swore softly.

"Send me photographs now."

Damian did.

She called back five minutes later.

"The notary stamp belongs to a former family-office paralegal named Dennis Voss."

"Find him."

"Already trying."

"And the loan proceeds?"

"We will trace them."

Damian sat down.

"Evelyn."

"Yes?"

"If Brenda used a forged guarantee, why frame Fiona for four hundred eighty thousand instead of hiding the three point two million?"

"Maybe the smaller transfer was not about money."

Damian frowned.

"Then what was it about?"

"Credibility."

Evelyn's voice was precise.

"If Fiona is publicly accused of stealing from your company, then anything she says afterward can be dismissed as retaliation."

Damian felt a chill.

"Anything she says about what?"

"That is what we need to find out."

After the call, Damian checked his phone.

There were three unread messages from Fiona.

The first had been sent twenty minutes earlier.

The hotel just told me my reservation was canceled by the corporate office.

The second came five minutes later.

They say someone called using your executive authorization code.

The third was one sentence.

Please tell me you did not do this.

Damian stood so fast his chair struck the wall.

He called her.

She answered on the second ring.

"Did you cancel it?"

"No."

Fiona breathed out.

"Thank you."

The relief in those two words hurt him.

"Where are you?"

"In the lobby."

"Stay there."

"Damian."

"Not because I'm ordering you."

He forced himself to slow down.

"Because I need to find out who used my code."

Fiona was quiet.

"Okay."

Damian called the hotel general manager.

Within ninety seconds, he had the answer.

The cancellation request came from a woman who knew his executive authorization code, his date of birth, and the private verification phrase used by the corporate travel office.

Only five people had that information.

Damian.

His chief of staff.

His security director.

Gertrude.

And Fiona.

The manager added one detail.

"Sir, the caller asked us not to let Mrs. O'Connor book another property in the group."

Damian's face went cold.

"Did she give a reason?"

"She said Mrs. O'Connor was under investigation for financial misconduct."

Damian looked toward the staircase.

Brenda was standing at the top.

She had a phone in her hand.

Their eyes met.

Brenda smiled.

May you like

Then she slowly closed her bedroom door.
