CHAPTER 2: THE FALL OF THE QUEEN

News travels quickly among wealthy people.

Humiliation travels even faster.

Within hours, videos from the Easter party flooded social media.

Millions watched Vivian scream at a seven-year-old child.

Millions watched Emily reveal the truth.

The public reaction was brutal.

Sponsors withdrew.

Board members resigned.

Charities quietly distanced themselves.

The woman who once controlled every room she entered suddenly found herself alone.

Three weeks later, the Hawthorne board held an emergency meeting.

Vivian arrived expecting loyalty.

Instead, she found silence.

One by one, directors voted.

Her remaining authority disappeared.

When the final vote was counted, she was removed from every executive position.

Charles wasn't spared either.

His investors abandoned him.

His reputation collapsed.

That evening he appeared at Emily's new home.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Broken.

Lily was drawing pictures in the living room when he knocked.

"Can we talk?" he asked.

Emily stepped outside.

For several moments neither spoke.

Then Charles lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

The words came too late.

Years too late.

Emily looked toward the window where Lily was laughing.

For the first time in years, her daughter looked happy.

"You didn't lose me today, Charles," Emily said softly.

May you like

"You lost us a long time ago."

And with that, she closed the door.
