Chapter 1: The Father Who Never Stopped Watching

Richard Sterling arrived at the Manhattan penthouse exactly eight minutes after the call.

Three black SUVs stopped in perfect formation beneath the private entrance. Four former military security officers rushed ahead while an emergency physician and two paramedics followed close behind.

The elevator doors opened before anyone pressed a button.

Building management had already received a single phone call from Sterling Capital.

No one wanted to delay Richard Sterling.

When he stepped into the apartment, the first thing he saw wasn't his daughter.

It was blood.

Tiny crimson drops stretched across the white marble floor toward the sofa.

Broken crystal glittered beneath the warm lights.

White orchids lay crushed beneath footprints.

The antique hickory cane rested casually on the couch.

As though it had never been used.

Then he saw Clare.

She looked impossibly small.

Her ivory dress had been torn open across the shoulder where dark bruises were already spreading beneath pale skin.

She tried to smile.

"I'm okay..."

Richard dropped to his knees.

For the first time in over thirty years, the billionaire who had negotiated billion-dollar mergers with presidents and CEOs found himself unable to speak.

He simply wrapped one trembling hand around his daughter's.

"I'm here," he whispered.

"You came..."

"I was always coming."

The emergency physician carefully examined her injuries.

"Possible fractured forearm."

"Multiple deep contusions."

"Significant blood loss."

"We're transporting immediately."

As the paramedics prepared the stretcher, Richard quietly looked toward the abandoned cane.

His chief of security followed his gaze.

"Mr. Sterling?"

Richard never raised his voice.

"Photograph everything."

"The cane."

"The glass."

"The blood."

"The cameras."

"I want every piece of evidence preserved before sunrise."

His security chief nodded once.

"It will be done."

Richard removed his tailored overcoat and gently covered Clare with it before walking beside the ambulance.

Only then did he make another phone call.

"Henderson."

"Yes, sir."

"Freeze every Sterling family trust connected to Matthew Hayes."

A pause.
