Chapter 15 - The Exit Plan

By the time I landed in Dallas, Eleanor Vale had already called me six times.
I did not answer any of them.
The seventh call went to Mara.
Eleanor asked for a private meeting.
Mara laughed out loud when she heard the word private.
"There will never be another private meeting with that family."
I agreed.
Eleanor tried again through her lawyer.
This time she offered information.
She said she could explain the psychiatric file.
She said she could explain why Dr. Michael Vale had submitted an insurance claim in my name.
Most importantly, she said Adrian had lied to Charles about what he intended to do after the Northstar transfer.
That last sentence got everyone's attention.
Federal prosecutors did not object to a controlled meeting as long as Eleanor understood she was not receiving immunity and anything she said could be subpoenaed.
She agreed anyway.
We met at Mara's office two days after I returned from Zurich.
Eleanor arrived in a cream suit with pearls at her throat and a lawyer beside her.
She looked exactly as she had at charity luncheons, church fundraisers, and family Christmas photographs.
That irritated me more than if she had looked exhausted.
Some people could stand in the ruins of other lives and still dress for lunch.
She stopped when she saw the bruising that remained along my jaw.
Her face changed for less than a second.
Then control returned.
"Evelyn."
I did not greet her.
Mara pointed toward the conference table.
"Mrs. Vale, your attorney confirmed you requested this meeting voluntarily."
Eleanor's lawyer nodded.
"Correct."
"You understand no confidentiality applies beyond attorney-client discussions with your own counsel."
"Yes."
"Then speak."
Eleanor looked at me.
"I never wanted that night to happen."
I almost stood up.
Mara saw it and placed one hand near mine.
"Which part?"
I asked.
Eleanor swallowed.
"The violence."
"You called it discipline."
Her lawyer shifted.
Eleanor's face tightened.
"I was angry."
"At me."
"At the situation."
"Your son put me in a hospital and you called me to complain that he was in jail."
She looked down.
"I handled that badly."
I laughed once.
"Badly?"
"Evelyn -"
"Do not soften your own words now."
She went quiet.
For years, Eleanor had made every cruelty sound like etiquette.
A slap became a misunderstanding.
A threat became stress.
A bruise became a private issue.
I was done letting vocabulary clean blood off the floor.
"Tell me about the psychiatric file."
Eleanor looked at her attorney.
He gave a small nod.
"Michael created it at Adrian's request."
"You signed the intake form."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Adrian said you were becoming paranoid."
My jaw tightened.
"Paranoid about what?"
"Vanessa."
"He was sleeping with her."
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"I know that now."
"You knew then."
She did not answer.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"And you signed a medical form saying my suspicion was mental illness."
Her lawyer started to interrupt.
Eleanor lifted a hand.
"Yes."
The word fell flat between us.
"Michael said the file would only be used if you became dangerous."
"Dangerous to whom?"
"To yourself."
"That is not what the guardianship petition says."
She looked at me sharply.
She had not known we had it.
Mara slid a copy across the table.
Eleanor read the first page.
The color drained from her face.
"I never saw this."
"Your son planned to have me taken from my house the morning after he assaulted me."
"I didn't know."
"Why should I believe you?"
She had no answer.
I continued.
"He planned to use that medical file to take control of my trust."
"He told me he needed a contingency if you had a breakdown."
"He was engineering the breakdown."
Eleanor's hands tightened around each other.
For the first time, she looked less polished than frightened.
"Charles said Adrian was protecting the company."
There it was.
Charles again.
"How long have you been protecting Northstar?"
Eleanor looked at her lawyer.
He whispered to her.
She ignored him.
"I did not create Northstar."
"That is not what I asked."
"Charles told me years ago that certain family investments had to remain separate from Vale Meridian."
"You received money from them."
Her face changed.
The Zurich ledger had not been public.
"How do you know that?"
"My mother kept better records than your family did."
Eleanor went completely still.
"Catherine?"
The way she said my mother's name told me they had known each other better than I realized.
"She recorded Peter."
Eleanor's eyes moved toward the door as if escape had briefly occurred to her.
"He named you."
Her attorney leaned close.
"Do not answer."
Eleanor ignored him again.
"Your mother hated me."
"Did she have a reason?"
Eleanor looked at me for a long time.
"Yes."
That answer surprised me.
"I took money I should not have taken."
Her lawyer actually closed his eyes.
Eleanor continued.
"Charles called it a family reserve."
"He said it came from private investments."
"I knew enough not to ask for paperwork."
"That is not innocence."
"I know."
Her voice cracked for the first time.
"I know that now."
I thought of my mother asking Peter who else knew.
Eleanor knows.
Nearly twenty years later, Eleanor finally said it herself.
"Why are you telling me this?"
She looked at me.
"Because Adrian is going to run."
Mara leaned forward.
"What makes you say that?"
"He called me yesterday."
My entire body tightened.
"He is not supposed to contact anyone connected to the investigation about evidence."
"He did not discuss evidence directly."
"What did he say?"
Eleanor swallowed.
"He asked for his grandfather's passport case."
Mara frowned.
"A case?"
"It contains old identity documents, cash, and bearer valuables Charles kept for emergencies."
"Where is it?"
"I told Adrian I did not know."
"Was that true?"
Eleanor looked at her hands.
"No."
Mara exhaled slowly.
"Where?"
"Charles keeps it in a private hangar at Addison Airport."
The same airport system where Vale Meridian maintained two corporate aircraft.
"Did Adrian know that?"
"Not the exact locker."
"Then why would he ask you?"
"Because Charles is no longer taking his calls."
That surprised me.
"Why not?"
Eleanor's mouth twisted.
"Because Charles discovered Adrian planned to take more than the Northstar money."
"How much more?"
"Everything he could move."
The room went silent.
Eleanor explained what she had learned from Charles.
Adrian's planned one-hundred-twenty-million-dollar transfer was only the visible transaction.
Once he controlled my trust and the Northstar subsidiaries, he intended to borrow against the distribution centers, drain two reserve accounts, and sell a block of company shares held through a family partnership.
The total could have exceeded two hundred seventy million dollars.
"Where was he going?"
Mara asked.
"He never told me."
"Was Vanessa going with him?"
Eleanor gave a strange laugh.
"Vanessa thought she was."
I looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
"Adrian had another set of travel documents."
"For whom?"
"Only himself."
I thought about Vanessa bargaining with prosecutors.
She had betrayed me for a man who planned to abandon her too.
Eleanor continued.
"Charles found out because Malcolm discovered the duplicate passport package and told him."
"Then why did Malcolm help Adrian after the assault?"
"Because Malcolm was paid by both of them."
Of course he was.
Loyalty inside the Vale family lasted exactly as long as the last payment.
Mara asked Eleanor to describe the hangar.
She did.
Private row C.
Unit fourteen.
A storage locker behind the aircraft-maintenance office.
The grandfather's case was supposedly inside a floor safe.
Federal agents were notified immediately.
Eleanor's lawyer objected to further questions and ended the meeting.
Before she left, Eleanor stopped beside my chair.
"I am sorry."
I looked up at her.
"For which part?"
She had no answer that could fit inside one sentence.
She walked away.
That evening, agents searched hangar C-14 under a warrant.
They found the floor safe.
The passport case was gone.
So were two envelopes of cash that Eleanor said Charles stored there.
But the safe was not empty.
Someone had left a thin black folder inside.
The cover read EVELYN - MEDICAL.
Dr. Michael Vale's name appeared on the first page.
The folder contained photographs of me entering therapy appointments during the first year of my marriage.
Not appointments with Michael.
Appointments with a counselor I had seen after my first serious argument with Adrian.
The folder also contained transcripts.
Word-for-word transcripts of sessions that should have been confidential.
My private therapy had been recorded.
Mara read the first page and stopped.
"Who could have done this?"
I looked at the therapist's name.
Dr. Rachel Monroe.
I had trusted her.
I had told her things I had never told my father.
I had told her I was afraid Adrian would eventually hurt me.
Someone had taken those words and spent years turning them into proof that I was mentally ill.
At the bottom of the final transcript was a payment code.
NORTHSTAR-MEDICAL CONSULTING.
My therapist had been paid by the same company that funded Vanessa, Malcolm, Peter, and Dr. Michael Vale.
Then Agent Ellis turned over the last page.

A handwritten note appeared in Adrian's writing.
RACHEL SAYS SHE WILL TESTIFY IF NEEDED.
