CHAPTER 3: THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

Three months later...
The headlines were everywhere.
FORMER CEO REMOVED AFTER SHAREHOLDER REVOLT.
Lucas spent every day giving interviews.
Blaming investors.
Blaming the economy.
Blaming everyone except himself.
No one believed him.
Sophie quickly discovered that luxury disappeared faster than promises.
The private chef was gone.
The sports cars were sold.
The mansion was seized to cover personal debts after several risky loans Lucas had secretly guaranteed against his own assets.
The people who once surrounded him vanished overnight.
The same friends who toasted his success no longer answered his calls.
One rainy afternoon...
Lucas appeared outside my office.
He looked ten years older.
His expensive suits had been replaced by an ordinary gray jacket.
His eyes carried something unfamiliar.
Regret.
"I made a mistake."
I remained silent.
"I never loved Sophie the way I loved you."
"You loved yourself," I answered calmly.
He lowered his head.
"I know."
"I'll spend the rest of my life making it right."
"You can't."
His eyes filled with tears.
"There are mistakes money can fix."
I paused.
"And there are mistakes that become your future."
He reached toward me.
I stepped back.
"Our marriage didn't end because of another woman."
He looked confused.
"It ended because you stopped respecting the person who stood beside you before you became successful."
Security quietly approached.
This time...
They were protecting me.
Lucas understood.
Without another word...
He walked away alone.
