Chapter 14 - The Witness Who Changed Sides

The court was silent when Eleanor took the stand.
She described herself as a devoted grandmother who had witnessed my instability and tried desperately to protect Lily.
Her voice broke at exactly the right moments.
I saw several people lower their eyes in sympathy.
Then Gabriel asked when she had last spoken to Lily alone.
“Sunday evening,” Eleanor answered.
“Where?”
“At my son's home.”
“Who else was present?”
“Only Andrew.”
Gabriel produced a visitor log obtained through proper discovery.
It showed Victor Sloane entering the property that evening and leaving forty minutes later.
Eleanor said she had forgotten.
Gabriel asked whether she had discussed my mental health with Mr. Sloane.
“No.”
He showed her an email in which she asked Sloane to recommend a doctor who would support a competency filing.
She refused to answer until the judge directed her to do so.
“I was concerned about Rachel,” she whispered.
“Concerned enough to obtain a letter from a deceased physician?”
Her attorney objected, and the judge instructed Gabriel to establish the proper foundation before pursuing the question.
He did.
The document's submission history, supported by testimony and certified records, traced it to a computer under the foundation's administrative control.
Eleanor denied preparing it.
Then the court called Ada Brooks.
Ada had worked in the Callahan household for seventeen years and depended on the job to help support her grandson.
Andrew stared at her as though willing her to remain silent.
Ada answered only what she knew.
She described hearing Eleanor instruct a staff member to search for a medical letter that could be changed to mention Rachel.
She also testified about the green ledger's storage place and Eleanor's attempt to move it.
“I didn't understand the money,” Ada said.
“But I understood that Mrs. Callahan knew she was hiding something.”
Andrew left the hearing during a recess and cornered Ada outside the courtroom.
A deputy intervened before any confrontation became physical.
That incident was documented separately.
By the end of the day, the judge rejected the requested transfer to Eleanor, maintained protective arrangements, and expanded supervised contact provisions in Lily's best interests.
I cried when I heard I could have longer visits.
But the relief lasted only until Gabriel received a message from Nora.
SHE'S GOING TO BLAME ANDREW FOR EVERYTHING.
“Who is?” I asked.
“Eleanor,” Gabriel said.
At the Callahan estate, Eleanor had just instructed Preston Vale to prepare a statement accusing her own son of engineering the fraudulent invoices.
She believed sacrificing Andrew might save the family businesses.
She did not know he had already taken something from her safe.
