Chapter 3 — The Papers Waiting at Home

Three days later...

Graham unlocked the front door expecting silence.

Instead, the house echoed.

Not with voices.

With absence.

Family photographs were gone.

Grace's toys had disappeared.

Miles' soccer shoes no longer sat beside the stairs.

The house looked beautiful.

And empty.

On the dining table rested a single envelope.

His name.

Inside were divorce papers.

Beside them lay another folder.

Every bank statement.

Every property document.

Every foundation report.

Attached to the front was a handwritten note.

"I stayed until my children were safe."

"I stayed until I could stand without you."

"Now I no longer need to."

His knees weakened.

He rushed upstairs.

Every closet belonging to Evelyn and the children stood empty.

Only his clothes remained.

For the first time in years...

The mansion felt exactly as large as it truly was.

His phone rang.

It was the chairman of the family foundation.

"We've accepted Evelyn's resignation."

Graham closed his eyes.

"No..."

The chairman continued.

"Along with her resignation..."

"...twenty-three major donors have withdrawn their funding."

"They informed us they'll only continue supporting projects under Evelyn's leadership."

His heartbeat stopped.

The foundation had never depended on his name.

May you like

It had depended on hers.

He simply hadn't known.
