Chapter 10: The Basement Vault

The concrete basement of the Hamptons estate was damp and smelled of stagnant seawater and old dust.

Footsteps echoed heavily down the narrow corridor leading to the reinforced walk-in vault at the back of the cellar
. A single overhead bulb flickered erratically, casting long, dancing shadows across the concrete walls.
Richard stood before the open steel door of the vault, his breathing ragged and frantic. He was frantically pulling out velvet-lined jewelry boxes, tumbling stacks of paper documents, and leather folders onto the concrete floor, tossing them aside like garbage when he realized they were empty.
“Where is it?” Richard screamed into the empty vault, slamming his fist against the metal shelving. “Where are the bearer bonds? Where are the accounts?!”
“Looking for your retirement fund, Richard?”
The cold, calm voice cut through the damp air of the basement like a scalpel.
Richard spun around so fast he nearly lost his footing, his eyes bulging as he stared down the dim corridor. Emerging from the shadows, stepping side-by-side with Jonathan Mercer, was Margaret. She wore her dark coat like a shroud, her expression carved from the same unrelenting stone as her grandfather’s.
Richard’s mouth worked soundlessly for a few seconds before a frantic, ugly laugh burst from his throat. “Margaret? What... how are you—did you help him? You ungrateful little parasite! After everything I gave you!”
“You gave me nothing, Richard,” Margaret said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward until she stood just ten feet away from him. “You stole my name, you stole my inheritance, and last night, you tried to sell me for twenty dollars in front of three hundred people.”
Richard’s face contorted with rage. He lunged toward the corner of the vault, his hand darting inside his jacket to pull out a heavy, dark steel revolver. “I should have finished what I started thirty years ago in that nursery!”

Before Richard’s finger could even curl around the trigger, a thunderous crack echoed through the concrete basement.
Bang.
