CHAPTER 13: THE CHOICE

Emma saw Thomas raise the gun.
She pushed Richard aside.
The bullet struck the metal door behind him.
Detective Ortiz fired again, hitting Thomas’s shoulder and knocking the weapon from his hand.
Agents dragged him from the warehouse seconds before the fuel tanks exploded.
The blast shook the ground.
Flames rose into the night sky as rain poured over the shipyard.
Thomas survived.
So did everyone else.
For Emma, that mattered more than revenge.
At the hospital, Eleanor began treatment to remove years of powerful medication from her system. Some memories returned quickly. Others remained trapped behind trauma and confusion.
Richard sat beside her every day.
Their reunion was not easy.
Eleanor blamed him for trusting Thomas.
Richard blamed himself even more.
Emma refused to let guilt destroy the family Thomas had already stolen eighteen years from.
“We cannot change what happened,” she told them. “But we can decide what happens next.”
Vanessa remained under guard in another hospital room.
She had risked her life to save Eleanor, but that did not erase what she had done to Emma.
When Emma visited her, Vanessa could barely meet her eyes.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” Vanessa said.
“Good.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I deserve that.”
“You deserve to face the consequences of your choices.”
“I know.”
Emma placed a document on the table beside her bed.
It was a revised cooperation agreement. In exchange for truthful testimony against Thomas and everyone connected to the conspiracy, Vanessa would receive protection—but not freedom from punishment.
“You’ll still serve time,” Emma said.
Vanessa looked at the document.
“Why are you helping me?”
“I’m not helping you escape justice. I’m giving you the chance to tell the truth.”
Vanessa signed.
Thomas’s trial began four months later.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Eleanor testified through a recorded deposition.
Richard testified about the financial conspiracy.
Vanessa described Adrian’s role and Thomas’s instructions.
Emma was the final witness.
Thomas watched her from the defense table with the same cold confidence he had shown at the shipyard.
His attorney attempted to portray her as unstable.
He asked about her marriage, her fear, and the years she had remained silent.
“Isn’t it true,” he said, “that you repeatedly chose to stay with Adrian Vale?”
Emma looked toward the jury.
“Yes.”
“Then perhaps your account of being trapped is exaggerated.”
“No.”
“You had money. You had a powerful father. You had opportunities to leave.”
Emma remained calm.
“Having a door does not mean you believe you are allowed to walk through it.”
The courtroom became silent.
She continued.
“Adrian controlled me with fear. Thomas controlled my life through lies. Both men believed that because I survived quietly, I would remain quiet forever.”
Emma turned toward Thomas.
“They were wrong.”
The jury convicted Thomas on every major charge.
He received multiple life sentences.

But before officers led him away, he leaned toward Emma.
“Adrian still has one secret you haven’t discovered.”
