CHAPTER 1: THE PARTY WAS EVIDENCE

For three long seconds, no one moved.

The two plainclothes detectives stood inside the study doorway while the forensic investigator opened a black equipment case on the dining table.

Julián slowly lowered his tequila glass.

Ofelia remained on her knees beside the recycling bin, one hand buried behind a black garbage bag.

Ernesto looked at her hand.

“Don’t touch anything else.”

Ofelia pulled back as though the bin had burned her.

“This is ridiculous,” she said. “You can’t simply enter my son’s home and frighten his guests.”

Detective Rosa Delgado stepped forward.

She was in her early forties, with a calm face and a voice that carried without becoming loud.

“We entered with the homeowner’s permission.”

Julián gave a sharp laugh.

“I am the homeowner.”

“No,” Ernesto replied. “You are not.”

The silence that followed was heavier than the one that had come before.

Julián turned toward him.

“What did you say?”

Ernesto nodded toward the recycling bin.

“Ask your mother what she was trying to retrieve.”

Ofelia rose too quickly, gripping the counter for balance.

“I wasn’t retrieving anything.”

The forensic investigator pulled on a pair of gloves and carefully moved the garbage bags aside.

Behind them was a torn bank envelope.

Inside were six pages of property documents, each ripped down the middle.

The investigator placed the pieces on a clean evidence sheet.

Julián’s expression hardened.

“Those are private financial records.”

“They are forged financial records,” Ernesto said.

Valeria watched through the glass doors from the garden.

She could not hear every word, but she saw Julián’s confidence begin to crack.

Detective Delgado opened a folder.

“Three months ago, a mortgage was taken out against this property for eight hundred thousand dollars.”

One of the guests gasped.

Julián turned toward Valeria through the glass.

His stare was sharp enough to make her step backward.

Delgado continued.

“The documents contain Valeria Salgado-Moreno’s signature. According to the bank, she appeared in person and approved the loan.”

“That’s correct,” Julián said quickly.

Ernesto looked at his daughter.

“Valeria was in the hospital that day.”

The room went still again.

“She underwent emergency surgery,” Ernesto continued. “I stayed beside her for eleven hours.”

Julián’s jaw tightened.

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

“No,” Delgado agreed. “But the bank’s security footage might.”

She removed a tablet from her bag and placed it on the kitchen island.

The screen showed a woman entering a private office at the bank.

She wore oversized sunglasses, a cream coat, and a silk scarf covering most of her hair.

At first glance, she resembled Valeria.

Then the woman turned slightly toward the camera.

The scarf slipped from her shoulder.

Ofelia’s face appeared clearly on the screen.

Several guests stepped away from her.

“That footage has been altered,” Ofelia whispered.

Detective Delgado paused the video.

“We also have the employee who prepared the paperwork.”

Ofelia looked at Julián.

For the first time that afternoon, mother and son did not appear united.

They appeared terrified of each other.

Julián pointed at her.

“She said Valeria had agreed to everything.”

Ofelia’s face collapsed.

“You told me she had agreed!”

The guests erupted into shocked whispers.

Detective Delgado raised one hand.

“Both of you need to stop speaking.”

But Ernesto did not stop them.

He knew frightened people often revealed more when they believed silence had already become useless.

Julián looked from his mother to the detectives.

Then he smiled again.

It was smaller this time.

More desperate.

“You found a loan,” he said. “That isn’t enough to turn a birthday party into an investigation.”

Ernesto’s gaze never left him.

“The loan is not why they came.”

Julián’s smile vanished.

Detective Delgado reached into the folder and removed a sealed plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a small digital recorder.

Valeria recognized it immediately.

She had hidden it beneath the bedroom dresser two weeks earlier.

Julián stared at the recorder.

Then he looked through the glass doors at his wife.

And in that moment, Valeria understood something terrifying.

May you like

He had known about it.

The entire time.
