Chapter 19 - The Last Door

The planning memo destroyed the last lie I might have been tempted to believe.
Gregory had not married me because his father forced him.
He had not accidentally fallen in love while spying on me.
He had not become violent only because Charles taught him violence.
He chose the target.
He chose the courtship.
He chose the marriage.
He chose the honeymoon.
And when he wrote that if I loved him I would give him everything he needed, he had defined love as access before I ever heard his name.
I stared at the screen until the letters stopped looking like words.
Captain Avery stood several feet away.
Charles sat behind the security glass.
For once, he did not smile.
"Did you know about this memo?"
I asked him.
Charles looked toward the wall.
"Some of it."
"Did you know Gregory planned to marry me?"
"He discussed it."
"Did you encourage him?"
"No."
That answer came quickly.
I believed it.
Not because Charles had suddenly become honest.
Because the memo itself said he thought marriage was unnecessary.
"You thought dating me was enough to steal the files."
"Yes."
"Gregory wanted more."
Charles's expression hardened.
"Gregory always wants to own what he is afraid of losing."
"You say that like you had nothing to do with it."
"He is forty years old."
Charles leaned toward the glass.
"At some point, a man's choices become his own."
The irony was almost unbearable.
Eleanor had written the same truth with love.
Charles said it with contempt.
Both were right.
Avery's terminal chimed.
Renee appeared on the secure line.
She was no longer alone.
David Chen sat beside her.
Behind them, several directors had returned to the boardroom.
"Ashlynn, we received the Project Meridian originals."
"Enough to extend the hold?"
David answered.
"Yes."
Relief moved through me so fast I had to grip the desk.
"How long?"
"Indefinitely pending investigation."
"Funds?"
"Frozen."
I closed my eyes.
Four hundred eighty million dollars was not going anywhere.
Charles heard the answer through the glass.
His face did not move.
But his right hand tightened into a fist.
Renee continued.
"The board has also voted to suspend closing authority on the transaction."
"Vote count?"
"Unanimous."
I looked at Charles.
"Including Ward?"
"Especially Ward."
David sounded almost amused.
"He has discovered a powerful interest in document integrity."
I almost laughed.
Almost.
"What about me?"
"Your removal meeting is canceled."
"My position?"
"Unchanged."
Renee leaned closer.
"But we need you to understand something."
Her tone changed.
"Federal investigators are now treating the audit as potential export-control and fraud evidence."
"Good."
"That means stop investigating on your own."
I looked around the bridge.
"I am currently on a cruise ship with the suspects."
"Exactly."
"I am trying to stop investigating."
"Try harder."
That sounded so much like Renee that I finally laughed.
The sound surprised me.
It was the first time I had laughed because something was actually funny since the honeymoon began.
Then Danner's voice came over Avery's radio.
"Bridge, we have a confirmed Gregory sighting."
The laughter vanished.
Avery grabbed the radio.
"Location?"
"Deck Fourteen."
My stomach tightened.
"Which section?"
A pause.
Then:
"Suite 1412."
Our honeymoon suite.
Of course.
"How did he get in?"
"Maintenance override."
Avery swore.
Danner continued.
"He is alone."
"Confirmed?"
"Thermal count and corridor camera."
"Is he armed?"
Another pause.
"Yes."
I already knew before he said it.
"He has the bat."
The original bat.
The evidence that disappeared from beneath the desk.
The object Gregory had insisted never existed.
I looked through the glass at Charles.
His face changed.
"Where did he get it?"
Avery asked.
"We found an empty evidence cavity inside Blake's security locker."
Danner's voice was grim.
"Looks like Blake hid it after the cabin search."
"And Gregory recovered it."
"Yes."
Avery reached for another radio.
"Lock down Deck Fourteen."
I moved toward the door.
Avery blocked me.
"No."
"I was not going to the suite."
"Good."
"I was going to medical."
He looked suspicious.
"Why?"
"Nicole."
I had almost forgotten what this looked like from her side.
She had witnessed Gregory before.
She had been pushed.
She had nearly been sedated.
Now the man responsible was armed one deck away.
Avery nodded.
"Take an escort."
"I do not need -"
He raised one eyebrow.
I stopped.
"Fine."
The officer who escorted me was named Mateo Alvarez.
I recognized him as the younger security officer from the cabin.
He had been the one who looked uncomfortable when Gregory described my supposed episodes.
We walked in silence until the elevator doors closed.
Then Mateo spoke quietly.
"I am sorry."
I looked at him.
"For what?"
"That first night."
"You did your job."
"Not well enough."
He looked at the floor indicator.
"I saw Blake go into the cabin after Chief Danner came out."
My attention sharpened.
"You saw him?"
"Yes."
"Why did you not say that before?"
His face tightened.
"He was my supervisor."
There it was again.
Fear.
Hierarchy.
The quiet machinery Charles relied on.
"Are you saying it now?"
"I already gave Danner a written statement."
I nodded.
"Then that is what matters."
The elevator opened.
Nicole was awake when I entered medical.
Lena sat beside her.
Nicole looked tired but alert.
"They found him."
It was not a question.
"Yes."
"With the bat?"
I nodded.
Her face changed.
"He had one in St. Thomas too."
Lena and I looked at each other.
"What happened there?"
Nicole swallowed.
"He was with another woman."
"Name?"
"I never knew."
Her eyes drifted toward the ceiling.
"They were arguing on a charter yacht."
"Eleanor's Grace?"
Nicole looked surprised.
"Yes."
"When?"
"Six months ago."
"What did you see?"
"Gregory had a short wooden club from the boat's sports locker."
Her voice became quieter.
"He did not hit her with it."
"But?"
"He kept tapping it against the railing while telling her she was not leaving until she apologized."
I felt cold.
"Did she leave?"
"Eventually."
"Why did you report it?"
"Because she was terrified."
Nicole looked at me.
"And because I heard him say the same thing he said on the broadcast."
"What?"
"You are making me do this."
Lena closed her eyes.
Nicole continued.
"Security interviewed her."
"And she denied it."
Nicole nodded.
"Charles arrived before they interviewed her a second time."
"Then the report disappeared."
"Yes."
I thought of the passenger file created before embarkation.
Potential observer.
They remembered Nicole because she had already threatened the Hartman story once.
"Do you know the woman's name now?"
I asked.
Nicole hesitated.
"I saw her passport when she checked in."
She closed her eyes to remember.
"Sabrina."
"Last name?"
"Coleman."
Mateo, standing near the door, quietly wrote it down.
Another witness.
Another woman.
Another story Gregory had tried to erase.
Then every phone in the room vibrated at once.
Emergency security alert.
Mateo looked at his screen.
"Gregory is demanding to speak to you."
I stared at him.
"No."
Mateo looked surprised.
"No?"
"He has spent a year deciding when I speak, where I stand, what I know, and what happens if I refuse."
I folded my arms.
"He does not get to summon me now."
Lena smiled faintly.
"Good."
Mateo's radio crackled.
Danner's voice came through.
"Ashlynn, I agree with you."
I looked at the radio.
"You are listening?"
"Open channel."
"Of course."
"Stay there."
"Gladly."
Danner continued.
"He says he has evidence he will destroy unless you come."
"Copies exist."
"I told him that."
"What did he say?"
"He says the drive contains something you have not seen."
My stomach tightened despite myself.
"What?"
Danner paused.
"He says it is about your company."
I looked at Mateo.
Renee's warning came back to me.
Stop investigating on your own.
I pressed the radio button.
"Tell Gregory to give the drive to security."
"He refuses."
"Then he can keep talking to the door."
Danner sounded almost amused.
"Understood."
The radio went quiet.
Ten minutes passed.
Then twenty.
Gregory did not surrender.
At the thirty-minute mark, a Coast Guard boarding team reached the cruise ship.
At the thirty-five-minute mark, Charles Hartman was formally separated for interview and evidence preservation.
At the forty-minute mark, Danner called again.
"He changed his demand."
"What now?"
"He wants a live connection to the board."
I laughed.
"Absolutely not."
"Agreed."
"What is he threatening?"
Danner went silent.
"Chief?"
"He says if we do not connect him, he will make sure nobody ever sees what is on the drive."
"Copies may exist."
"He claims this one does not."
"He lies."
"Usually."
Danner's voice changed.
"But he just read me the first line of the file."
My chest tightened.
"What line?"
Danner read it slowly.
"MERIDIAN INTERNAL CONTACT - ASTERON SYSTEMS."
The medical room went silent.
I looked at Mateo.
Then Lena.
Then Nicole.
The Hartmans had someone inside my company.
Someone who had given Gregory my audit assignment before he ever approached me.
Someone who might still be sitting in Asteron's boardroom.
"Did he give a name?"
"No."
"Will he?"
"Only if you come to the suite."
I stared toward the ceiling as if I could see through the decks above me.
Gregory had finally found something I genuinely needed.
He knew it.
Then Danner added one more detail.
"Ashlynn, the corridor camera shows he moved the bat away from the door."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning I think he wants you inside more than he wants to hurt you at the threshold."
I understood.
This was not just a hostage demand.
It was a reenactment.
The cabin.
The locked door.
The bat.
Gregory wanted one last chance to make the original story end the way he had planned.
I looked at Mateo.
"Can security wire the hallway microphone into the suite speakers?"
He nodded slowly.
"Probably."
"Then I will talk to him."
Lena stood.
"From here?"
"No."
I looked toward the elevator.
"From outside the door."
Mateo started to object.
I raised one hand.
"I am not going inside."
I thought of Gregory's first command on the honeymoon.
Now we're finally alone.
No.
We would never be alone again.
May you like
"If Gregory wants the last conversation, he gets it with security, Coast Guard officers, cameras, and half the ship listening."
