Chapter 10: The House at the Border

The isolated house belonged to one of Claire’s shell companies.

Police surrounded it shortly after midnight.

I was ordered to remain in the command vehicle.

My father ignored the same order and stood beside me.

Through the trees, we could see light in an upstairs window.

Detective Ortiz entered with a tactical team.

For six minutes, we heard nothing.

Then the radio exploded with voices.

“Back room clear.”

“Basement clear.”

“Movement upstairs.”

A shot rang out.

My father reached for the door.

I stopped him.

Seconds later, officers dragged Adrian from the house.

He wore jeans, a heavy coat, and blood across one side of his face.

He was alive.

Claire was not inside.

Adrian saw me through the vehicle window.

His expression broke.

“Emma!”

He fought the officers.

“Emma, listen to me!”

I stepped outside before anyone could stop me.

My father followed.

Adrian’s wrists were cuffed behind his back.

“You have to believe me,” he said. “Claire planned Lily’s death.”

“You helped her.”

“I thought Lily would survive.”

“You walked into her room.”

His face changed.

“You saw the recording?”

“She begged you to stay.”

“I was afraid.”

“She was six.”

“I didn’t know what Claire had given her.”

“You knew enough to leave.”

Adrian dropped to his knees.

“I loved her.”

“No.”

My voice remained steady.

“You loved being admired by her. You loved hearing her call you Daddy. But love does not walk away while a child is begging for air.”

He began crying.

Perhaps the tears were real.

They changed nothing.

Ortiz pulled him toward the police vehicle.

“Where is Claire?” my father asked.

Adrian looked at the dark house.

“She betrayed me. She took the money and left.”

“How did you get the backpack?”

“Vanessa gave it to me after she replaced the inhaler.”

“Why keep it?”

“Insurance.”

Even while our daughter was dying, he had been collecting evidence to use against his accomplices.

He never trusted anyone because no one should have trusted him.

Inside the house, officers found false passports and travel plans.

Claire intended to leave through a private airfield.

But the flight manifest listed only one passenger.

She had never planned to take Adrian.

Ortiz received a report from the airport.

Claire’s car had been found abandoned beside a runway.

The aircraft was still there.

Claire was gone.

A search dog followed her scent into nearby woods.

The trail ended beside a river.

Police believed she had crossed the border by boat.

Adrian was transported back to New York.

As the car door closed, he looked at me.

“Claire has a final recording,” he said.

“She made Lily say something.”

I stepped closer.

“What did she make my daughter say?”

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“A goodbye message.”

Before he could explain, Ortiz shut the door.

Hours later, Claire released the recording online.

Lily appeared alone on the screen.

Her face was pale.

Her voice trembled.

“Mommy says I have to go away.”

The video ended.

And once again, the world believed I had killed my child.
