CHAPTER 1: THE MAN IN THE HELICOPTER

The first helicopter hovered above Blackthorn Manor like a storm that had come looking for one man.

Nathan stood frozen in the center of the grand hall.

The riding crop lay near his polished shoes.

Celeste’s champagne glass trembled against her fingers.

A second helicopter swept over the estate, flooding the tall windows with white light. Then a third appeared beyond the trees.

Nathan finally found his voice.

“What did you do?”

I remained on the floor, clutching the phone against my chest.

My father’s voice came through the speaker.

“Evelyn, medical personnel are entering through the east doors. Do not let Nathan move you.”

Nathan stared at the phone.

Then he laughed.

It was not a confident laugh.

It was the desperate sound of a man trying to convince himself that he was still in control.

“You think some private security team can walk into my home?”

My father answered before I could.

“It was never your home.”

The main doors opened.

Six security officers entered first, dressed in dark tactical uniforms without visible weapons. Behind them came two paramedics carrying medical equipment.

The final man walked through the doorway alone.

Elias Vale.

My father.

Nathan’s face changed instantly.

Every trace of arrogance disappeared.

My father was not a retired accountant.

He was the founder of Vale Dominion Group, a private investment empire controlling ports, airlines, technology firms, defense contractors, and nearly a third of the commercial freight routes Nathan’s company depended on.

Nathan had spent years trying to meet him.

He had once waited six hours outside a private conference in Geneva just for the chance to shake his hand.

Now Elias Vale stood inside Blackthorn Manor, looking at him as though he were something unpleasant beneath his shoe.

Nathan whispered, “Mr. Vale?”

My father did not answer.

He crossed the hall, removed his jacket, and placed it around my shoulders.

Only then did his expression crack.

His hands trembled as he touched my face.

“I should have come sooner.”

“You came when I called.”

The paramedics helped me onto a stretcher.

Nathan stepped forward.

One security officer moved between us.

“Get out of my way,” Nathan snapped. “That is my wife.”

My father slowly turned.

“No,” he said. “That is my daughter.”

Celeste rose from the armchair and quietly began moving toward the side corridor.

A female security officer blocked her path.

“Leaving so soon, Ms. Monroe?”

Celeste forced a smile.

“I had nothing to do with this. Nathan lost control.”

Nathan looked at her in disbelief.

“You told me to do it.”

“I never told you anything.”

The sapphire pendant at my throat flashed once.

My father looked at both of them.

“You should be more careful about denying conversations that were recorded.”

Nathan’s face went pale.

My father’s legal counsel entered with two federal investigators.

One of them held up a warrant.

“Nathan Ashford, you are being detained in connection with financial fraud, unlawful confinement, evidence tampering, and conspiracy.”

Nathan backed away.

“This is insane. Evelyn is unstable. Ask her doctors.”

My father’s gaze hardened.

“We already did.”

The investigators secured Nathan’s hands.

As they led him toward the doors, he twisted around to look at me.

“This is not over.”

My father stood beside my stretcher.

“You’re right,” he told Nathan.

“It hasn’t even started.”

Nathan was taken outside.

Celeste was escorted after him.

But before the paramedics carried me from the hall, my father leaned close and spoke so only I could hear.

“There’s something you need to know.”

His voice was filled with regret.

“Nathan wasn’t working alone.”

I looked up at him.

May you like

My father’s eyes shifted toward one of his own security officers.

“The person who helped him,” he whispered, “came from inside our family.”
