Chapter 11 - Chloe Finally Told Me the Truth About Noah

Chloe arrived at Westbridge Storage forty minutes after her text.
She came alone except for Noah.
Marcus had told her where we were because he wanted her statement documented before Julian could pressure her.
She stepped into the business lounge, saw the photograph on the table, and stopped walking.
For a moment, nobody said anything.
Then Chloe closed her eyes.
"She knew."
I looked at her.
"Eleanor?"
Chloe nodded.
"Julian told me she hired someone."
Marcus leaned forward.
"When?"
"About nine months ago."
"What exactly did he tell you?"
Chloe sat down slowly.
Noah stirred in the carrier beside her.
"He said his mother had become paranoid because Elena was filling her head with ideas."
I did not react.
By then, Julian blaming me had become background noise.
"Did he mention the investigator by name?" Marcus asked.
"No."
"Did he mention Cameron Ellis?"
Chloe looked at the photograph again.
"Yes."
My stomach tightened.
"So Julian knew about Cameron."
"He knew we had been engaged."
"Did he know you were still seeing him?"
Chloe's face reddened.
"It wasn't like that."
Nadia's voice stayed calm.
"Then tell us what it was like."
Chloe stared at her hands.
"Cameron and I were together for almost four years."
"We got engaged."
"Then I met Julian at a Northstar event."
She swallowed.
"Julian said his marriage was finished and he was waiting for his mother to accept it before filing."
I said nothing.
"I believed him."
"At first, I was seeing Julian while Cameron and I were separated but not completely done."
Her voice became smaller.
"It was messy."
"How messy?" Nadia asked.
Chloe looked at Noah.
"There are about three weeks I can't account for cleanly."
I understood immediately.
"The conception window."
She nodded.
"Yes."
Marcus folded his hands.
"Did Julian know that?"
Chloe laughed once without humor.
"He knew before I did."
That surprised all of us.
"How?" I asked.
"I was late."
"I told him before I took the test because I was scared."
"The first thing he asked was when I had last seen Cameron."
Chloe's eyes filled.
"I told him the truth."
"What did he say?"
She looked directly at me.
"He said it didn't matter."
I felt something twist inside my chest.
"Didn't matter?"
"He said if the baby was born while we were together, we would raise him as ours."
I stared at her.
"That sounds almost generous until you remember what he did with the uncertainty."
Chloe flinched.
"I know."
"Did he ever talk about what Cameron might want?"
"No."
"Did he ever ask whether Noah deserved to know?"
"No."
"Did he ever ask what you wanted?"
Chloe took too long to answer.
"Not really."
She opened another message thread.
Julian had written, We do not need three adults making decisions about one child.
Another message said, Cameron can live with uncertainty the way everyone else does.
A third said, Once Mom sees us as a family, the rest becomes irrelevant.
I felt sick.
"He knew enough to be uncertain, but he wanted everyone else to act certain."
Chloe nodded.
"Yes."
"And you agreed."
She looked at me.
"Yes."
There was no defense in her face that time.
That honesty made the room less hostile, not more.
"Why?"
"Because uncertainty terrified me."
She looked down at Noah.
"Julian made certainty sound like something money could buy."
"A condo."
"A company."
"A house in New York."
"A family name."
"He kept saying if we acted like the future was decided, everyone else would eventually accept it."
I thought about the way Julian had walked through JFK.
He had not returned to explain his life.
He had returned to announce a decision he believed the rest of us were required to accept.
Chloe wiped her eyes.
"I helped him do that to you."
"Yes."
She winced, but I did not soften the word.
"And I am not going to tell you it was okay because he lied to you too."
"I know."
"But I believe you are telling the truth now."
Her shoulders dropped slightly.
For that moment, it was enough.
Then I returned to the question that mattered for Noah.
"Did he ever ask for a paternity test?"
"No."
"Did you?"
"I suggested one."
"And?"
Chloe's mouth tightened.
"He got angry."
She pulled out her phone and scrolled through messages.
"He said a test would create drama when we needed to look stable."
"Stable for whom?" Marcus asked.
Chloe turned the phone toward him.
A message from Julian read, Mom will calm down once she sees the ultrasound and understands there is a grandson coming.
Another said, If she knows there is an heir, she will stop letting Elena poison everything.
My fingers went cold.
He had not just accepted the possibility Noah might not be his.
He had seen the unborn child as leverage.
Chloe scrolled again.
A third message was worse.
Do not mention Cameron to anyone until the estate is settled.
Nadia took a slow breath.
"Did he know Eleanor had already changed the trust?"
"Not exactly."
Chloe looked toward me.
"He knew she was angry and moving things around."
"He thought the baby would fix it."
I remembered the airport.
Chloe just gave me the son you could never give me.
He had said it with certainty.
With cruelty.
Knowing there had always been a question.
For the first time since he returned, I felt something colder than anger.
Disgust.
"He used Noah to hurt me," I said.
Chloe nodded slowly.
"Yes."
She did not defend him.
That mattered.
I looked at the sleeping baby.
His tiny fist rested beneath his chin.
He had no idea how many adults had already tried to turn his existence into proof of something.
A legacy.
A betrayal.
An inheritance.
A punishment.
He was just a baby.
"Does Cameron know?"
Chloe nodded.
"He suspects."
"Why?"
"Because of the timing."
"And because I met him at the clinic."
I looked at the photograph.
"What clinic?"
"A prenatal genetic screening center."
"Why was Cameron there?"
Chloe's eyes dropped.
"Because I called him."
Julian's version of the photograph became less useful with every sentence.
"You kissed him."
"I did."
"Were you together again?"
"For one night."
Her honesty came like a slap.
"Not sexually."
"I mean emotionally."
"I panicked after the ultrasound."
"I realized the baby might be his, and I called him."
"He held me outside the clinic, and I kissed him."
She pressed her palms together.
"Then I went back to Julian because Julian told me the uncertainty didn't matter and promised he would protect us."
Nadia looked at her carefully.
"Protect you from what?"
"From being broke."
There it was again.
Money.
Chloe looked embarrassed but did not look away.
"I was twenty-four."
"I had student debt."
"Cameron was starting over."
"Julian had a company, a luxury condo, and a family estate he said was worth millions."
She swallowed.
"I chose the life that looked safer."
I thought of Eleanor's video.
Do not punish Chloe for your choices either.
I understood why Eleanor had said it.
Chloe had made ugly choices.
But Julian had built the stage on which she made them.
"Why are you telling us now?" I asked.
Chloe looked at me for a long time.
"Because last night he told me if I cooperated with Marcus, he would make sure I never saw a dollar for Noah."
"And?"
"And then I realized he has been talking about Noah like a financial position since before Noah was born."
Her voice shook.
"I don't want my son growing up inside that."
Marcus slid a legal pad toward her.
"Would you be willing to provide copies of these messages?"
"Yes."
"Would you sign a preservation statement?"
"Yes."
"Would you speak with Dominion's investigators if counsel advises it?"
Chloe hesitated.
Then nodded.
"Yes."
My phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
I ignored it.
It rang again.
Then Chloe's phone started ringing too.
She looked at the screen and went white.
"It's Cameron."
"Why is he calling both of us?"
Chloe stared at me.
"Because I gave him your number last night."
I could not believe it.
"Why?"
"I told him if something happened to me, he should contact you."
Nadia's eyes sharpened.
"What did you think might happen?"
Chloe shook her head quickly.
"Not violence."
"Julian was panicking."
"He kept saying people were trying to take everything from him."
"He smashed a glass in the hotel room."
"He threw my phone across the bed."
"He never hit me."
She said the last sentence too quickly.
Nadia leaned forward.
"You do not have to minimize anything for our comfort."
Chloe looked down.
Her phone stopped ringing.
A text appeared.
She read it.
Then she handed the phone to Marcus.
Cameron's message contained a photograph of a legal document.
PETITION TO ESTABLISH PARENTAGE.
Chloe's breath trembled.
"He filed it this morning."
I looked at Noah.
Chloe did too.

For the first time, the question Julian had tried to bury was no longer private.
A court was about to answer it.
