Chapter 1: The Papers That Stopped the Music
The ballroom fell silent as August Bell carefully unfolded a cream-colored document that looked older than anyone in the room.
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he said calmly, "I apologize for interrupting this evening, but the Ashford Rose Tiara is not merely an heirloom. It is a protected cultural asset held under the Ashford Family Heritage Trust."
The photographers lowered their cameras.
Then raised them again.
This time, every lens pointed toward Julian.
August removed another document.
"The tiara is insured for forty-eight million dollars."
A ripple swept across the ballroom.
"But more importantly," he continued, "under the trust agreement signed in 1987, the tiara may never leave the Ashford family vault unless personally authorized by the legal trustee."
He looked directly at Madeline.
"The sole trustee is Mrs. Madeline Ashford Whitmore."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
"There isn't."
August slid another folder across the table.
"The vault records show unauthorized access three days ago."
Celeste slowly removed her hand from the diamonds.
Julian forced a smile.
"I had my wife's permission."
Madeline met his eyes.
"No."
One word.
Nothing more.
August nodded.
"The vault uses biometric authentication."
Another page appeared.
"The fingerprints belonged to Mrs. Whitmore."
Julian smiled again.
"A husband has access."
August shook his head.
"No."
Then he revealed the final page.
"The biometric system also records who disables security."
Julian stopped breathing.
"It recorded a duplicate fingerprint mold."
Gasps echoed around the ballroom.
Madeline quietly added,
"You copied my fingerprint while I was asleep."
May you like
For the first time that evening...
Julian looked afraid.
