CHAPTER 2 – The Brother Who Never Stopped Looking

CHAPTER 2 – The Brother Who Never Stopped Looking

For several long seconds...

No one moved.

Daniel stared at Elena as if the past eight years had vanished.

The bruises.

The swollen cheek.

The arm twisted inside the splint.

Every injury answered the questions he had carried for years.

His voice shook.

"Elena..."

She tried to smile.

Instead, tears rolled silently down her face.

Garrett recovered first.

He stepped between them, placing a possessive hand on Elena's shoulder.

"You know each other?"

Daniel never looked away from his sister.

"I'm her brother."

Silence swallowed the room.

Garrett forced a polite smile.

"What a coincidence."

"No," Daniel replied quietly.

"It isn't."

He slowly picked up the tablet he had dropped.

Years working inside the hospital had taught him to recognize injuries.

Accidents.

Falls.

Car crashes.

Domestic violence.

This wasn't an accident.

The bruises were different ages.

Old yellow marks.

Fresh purple fingerprints.

Healing cuts.

New swelling.

A pattern.

One no staircase could ever create.

He looked directly at Elena.

"Can you tell me how this happened?"

Garrett answered before she could speak.

"She slipped."

Daniel ignored him.

"I asked my sister."

Garrett's smile tightened.

"She's in pain."

Daniel stepped closer.

"So am I."

The room became painfully quiet.

Then Elena looked at her brother.

For the first time in eight years...

She wasn't alone.

Her lips trembled.

"I..."

Garrett squeezed her shoulder.

Hard.

A silent warning.

Daniel saw it.

Every movement.

Every flicker of fear in Elena's eyes.

He immediately understood.

She wasn't protecting Garrett.

She was surviving him.

Daniel pressed a small red button beneath the X-ray control panel.

Most visitors never noticed it.

Hospital Security Alert.

Not an emergency.

A silent request for assistance.

Garrett didn't notice.

He was too busy watching Elena.

Within two minutes...

A nurse entered.

Then another.

Finally, a hospital security officer appeared beside the door.

Daniel spoke calmly.

"I need a private examination."

Garrett frowned.

"I'm her husband."

Daniel nodded.

"And hospital policy requires patients with suspected domestic injuries to be interviewed alone."

Garrett laughed.

"This is ridiculous."

The security officer stepped forward.

"Sir... please wait outside."

Garrett looked at Elena.

His eyes promised punishment.

"I'll be right outside."

When the door finally closed...

Elena broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

She simply covered her face and whispered words Daniel had prayed to hear for years.

May you like

"He did this."

Everything changed.
