Chapter 3 — Everything He Built Began to Collapse
The wedding never resumed.
Guests quietly stepped away from Ryan as whispers spread across the ballroom.
Business partners exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Several investors walked toward Alexander Whitmore instead.
Everyone in Los Angeles knew the Whitmore family.
Few knew Mariana was the rightful heir to the Whitmore fortune.
Tonight...
Everyone learned.
Alexander placed one protective hand on Mariana's shoulder.
"My daughter lost her inheritance as a child."
He looked directly at the guests.
"Three years ago, she found her family again."
He smiled proudly at the children.
"And these beautiful children are my heirs."
The room erupted into stunned murmurs.
Ryan looked around desperately.
Every person he expected to support him avoided his eyes.
Vanessa removed her veil.
Without another word, she placed it in Ryan's hands.
"I'm leaving."
He reached for her.
"Vanessa..."
She stepped back.
"If you could abandon your own unborn children..."
Her voice remained calm.
"...one day you'll abandon mine too."
She walked away without looking back.
Rebecca hurried after her.
"Please..."
"Listen—"
Vanessa never slowed.
The ballroom doors closed behind her.
Ryan stood alone at the altar.
Exactly where Mariana had once stood.
Humiliated.
Rejected.
Powerless.
For the first time in years...
He understood what abandonment truly felt like.
He slowly approached Mariana.
Tears filled his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"I was wrong."
"I'll spend the rest of my life making this right."
The oldest twin quietly stepped behind his mother's leg.
He didn't recognize the stranger standing before him.
Mariana gently rested a hand on her son's shoulder.
"They don't need promises."
She looked at Ryan with quiet dignity.
"They needed a father."
"You chose not to become one."
Ryan collapsed into a nearby chair.
His shoulders shook.
May you like
But no one comforted him.
Because some losses arrive years after the choice that created them.
