Chapter 14 - Vanessa’s Hidden Child

Vanessa had a son.

Nobody knew.

Not Daniel.

Not me.

Not Claire.

Apparently not even the people assigned to protect her.

His name was written on the back of the photograph she sent.

Eli.

Six years old.

Brown hair.

Serious eyes.

Holding Adrian Cross’s hand.

The image had been taken that morning.

“Find her.”

Claire told the federal agents.

They were already moving.

Daniel looked stunned.

“She never told me.”

I turned on him.

“You slept with her for eight months and didn’t know she had a child?”

Pain crossed his face.

“We didn’t exactly build a healthy relationship.”

At least he knew.

The agents traced Vanessa’s phone.

Dead.

Last signal near Logan Airport.

Too obvious.

Luka examined the photograph.

“This isn’t recent.”

“What?”

I asked.

“Look at the trees.”

Outside the window behind Adrian and Eli were bright autumn leaves.

“It’s August.”

Claire stared.

“So the photograph is old.”

“But Vanessa said Adrian has him.”

“He still might.”

Luka zoomed in.

“Look at Eli’s shirt.”

A school logo.

Rafael recognized it.

“St. Matthew’s Academy.”

“Where?”

“Connecticut.”

Federal agents contacted the school.

Eli Cole had been withdrawn two days earlier.

Authorized pickup.

Marianne Cole.

My godmother.

Vanessa’s mother.

I stared at Marianne.

She went white.

“I didn’t.”

“You’re Vanessa’s mother?”

Daniel exclaimed.

Marianne closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Another secret.

Of course.

“Why does Vanessa have a different relationship with you?”

“She uses my maiden surname publicly.”

“You let your daughter become my husband’s mistress?”

Marianne looked sick.

“I didn’t know until three months ago.”

“And you said nothing to me?”

“I was trying to get her away from Daniel.”

Vanessa’s relationship with Daniel suddenly had another layer.

My godmother’s daughter.

Placed inside Daniel’s company.

Nothing was coincidence.

“Was Vanessa assigned too?”

I asked.

Marianne looked at me.

“Yes.”

Daniel stared.

“By who?”

“Adrian.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

“What was her assignment?”

“To watch you.”

“Why?”

“Adrian believed you were losing control.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

The mistress had been surveillance.

Their affair had still been real.

But it had begun inside another manipulation.

There were victims inside victims.

Choices inside coercion.

Nothing clean.

“What happened when Vanessa fell in love with Daniel?”

I asked.

Marianne looked at him.

“I don’t think she did.”

Daniel flinched.

Good.

He deserved at least one small wound.

“Then why continue?”

“Adrian had Eli.”

“What?”

“Eli’s father?”

Marianne stopped.

“Richard Cross.”

Silence.

Judge Richard Cross.

Vanessa had a child with Adrian’s brother.

“Did Richard know?”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel?”

“No.”

Daniel looked genuinely nauseated.

“So Vanessa slept with me while raising my cousin?”

“If the bloodlines we just learned are accurate…”

Luka said carefully.

“Eli may be something else entirely.”

Nobody wanted to calculate it.

We stopped.

Claire focused us.

“Vanessa took the donor files because Adrian threatened Eli.”

“Yes.”

Marianne said.

“She will deliver them.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

Marianne closed her eyes.

“When Vanessa was young, I used to take her to a cottage in Newport.”

“Address?”

She gave it.

Agents left immediately.

But I knew Adrian would expect that.

“So what does Vanessa actually want?”

I asked.

Marianne looked at me.

“To save her son.”

“No.”

“I mean from us.”

A pause.

“She wants us to understand.”

“Understand what?”

“That she can’t hand Adrian originals.”

“Why?”

“Because once he has them, Eli becomes unnecessary.”

That was chilling.

“So she needs to make him believe he has them without actually giving them.”

Luka nodded.

“She may have taken the files to copy them.”

“Or switch them.”

Rafael added.

“Where could she do that?”

Daniel suddenly looked up.

“My office.”

Everyone turned.

“Cross Biomedical has a secure document imaging lab.”

“Biometric access?”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa?”

“She still has access.”

Agents redirected.

We waited.

Hours.

Isabella slept in my arms.

The courthouse emptied around us.

At 4:20 p.m., Agent Miller returned.

His expression was grim.

“We found the imaging lab.”

“And?”

“Blood on the floor.”

My heart stopped.

“Whose?”

“Unknown.”

“Vanessa?”

“No body.”

“Files?”

“Gone.”

Daniel stood.

“Cameras?”

“Disabled.”

Luka asked.

“Any message?”

The agent looked at me.

“Yes.”

A phrase was written on the scanner glass.

In red marker.

THE WRONG SON INHERITS AT MIDNIGHT.

My father went pale.

“What does that mean?”

I asked.

Gabriel checked his watch.

“Trust activation.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

My pulse quickened.

“Why midnight?”

“Isabella’s birth has to be certified through the fiduciary system within forty-eight hours.”

“What happens if it isn’t?”

“The trust falls to the alternate Moretti heir.”

“Who?”

Gabriel looked at Daniel.

“Carlo’s biological son.”

Daniel.

My husband.

My half-brother.

My stomach turned again.

“If Luka certifies Isabella before midnight…”

“She becomes beneficiary.”

“And if he doesn’t?”

“Daniel inherits control.”

Daniel immediately stood.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“I waive it.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“You can’t.”

“Then I disclaim.”

“Not before activation.”

“Why?”

“The trust was designed to prevent coercive disclaimers.”

Luka looked at the clock.

“We have eight hours.”

“What do we need?”

“Original donor proof.”

Gabriel answered.

“Why?”

“To certify that Isabella qualifies as the Moretti-contingency child.”

“The independent DNA test isn’t enough?”

“No.”

“The trust requires chain-of-custody evidence from Meridian.”

Vanessa had it.

Of course.

“So Adrian’s message means he wants Daniel to inherit.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian believes he can control Daniel.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Not anymore.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“Then he’ll kill you.”

Silence.

Daniel sat.

For once, no one contradicted it.

We needed Vanessa.

We needed the files.

And we had less than eight hours.

At 5:03, Vanessa called.

Unknown secure line.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

“No time.”

Her breathing was fast.

“Is Eli safe?”

“No.”

“Where is he?”

“With Richard.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you have the files?”

“Yes.”

Relief hit.

“Bring them.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian put a tracker inside the archive case.”

Luka took the phone.

“Can you remove it?”

“No.”

“Then abandon the case.”

“I copied everything.”

“Where are the copies?”

“Three places.”

“Tell me.”

“I will when Eli is safe.”

Claire took over.

“Vanessa, federal agents can help.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because one of them works for Adrian.”

The room froze.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“How do you know?”

“Richard showed me live footage from inside your courthouse conference room.”

Everyone looked toward the ceiling.

A camera.

Federal space.

Compromised.

“We leave now.”

Luka said.

Vanessa continued.

“Sofia.”

“Yes?”

“I need you to do something.”

“What?”

“Go to the old St. Catherine chapel.”

“Why?”

“There’s a locker behind the organ.”

“Number?”

“204.”

The brass token my father left.

My heart jumped.

“What’s inside?”

“Proof Marianne didn’t tell you everything.”

Marianne went pale.

“Vanessa.”

Her daughter heard.

“Mom?”

Marianne began crying.

“Please come home.”

“I can’t.”

“Eli needs you.”

“I know.”

“Then let us help.”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“I’m trying.”

Then she whispered:

“Sofia.”

“Yes?”

“Don’t let Luka open locker 204.”

Luka’s face hardened.

“Why?”

I asked.

Vanessa answered.

“Because what’s inside proves Luka met your father two years ago.”

The line went dead.

I turned toward Luka.

He didn’t deny it.

May you like

And that was the moment I knew.

This time, he had lied.
