Chapter 2: The Mechanic Who Owned an Empire

No one understood why my father was smiling.
Not Ethan.
Not Madison.
Not Charles Blackwell.
Not even me.
The laughter continued until my father slowly reached into the inside pocket of his old suit jacket.
He didn't pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a phone.
One quiet call.
"Bring the car around."
Nothing more.
Charles chuckled.
"Calling for a tow truck?"
More laughter.
My father ended the call and calmly looked at him.
"No."
"I'm calling my board."
The church fell silent.
Charles frowned.
"What board?"
My father didn't answer.
Thirty seconds later, the heavy church doors opened.
Four men in tailored suits walked inside, followed by two women carrying leather briefcases.
Every one of them headed directly toward my father.
The oldest man stopped in front of him and bowed his head respectfully.
"Good morning, Chairman."
The words echoed through the church.
Chairman?
Confusion spread across every face.
The man opened one of the briefcases and removed several folders.
"Our legal team has completed the acquisition."
Charles frowned.
"...Acquisition?"
The lawyer turned toward him.
"As of nine o'clock this morning, Blackwell Developments has officially become a wholly owned subsidiary of Ashford Global Holdings."
Charles' smile disappeared.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
The lawyer calmly placed the signed documents in Charles's shaking hands.
"It became possible when our chairman purchased the remaining controlling shares overnight."
Charles's fingers trembled.
He stared at the signature.
Alexander Ashford.
My father.
The mechanic everyone mocked.
The billionaire no one recognized.
The church exploded into stunned silence.
Ethan slowly released Madison's hand.
His face turned completely white.
"You..."
He looked at my father.
"...you're Alexander Ashford?"
My father finally nodded.
"I retired from public life twenty-five years ago."
"I fixed cars because I enjoyed honest work."
"And because I wanted my daughter to grow up loved..."
"...not hunted for my money."
Then he looked directly at Ethan.
"And today..."
"You showed me exactly who you are."
