Chapter 3: The Recording

Detective Hayes didn't raise her voice.

She simply held out her hand.

"The phone."

I unlocked it and placed it in her palm.

The recording continued playing.

Every sentence filled the living room.

"Your brother needs that money more than you need to stay alive."

Silence.

"Stop being selfish."

Another silence.

Then came my father's voice.

Cold.

Clear.

Impossible to explain away.

The detective paused the recording.

She slowly looked at Richard.

"Did you put your hands around your daughter's throat?"

Richard swallowed.

"I..."

"It wasn't like that."

The detective nodded.

"I've heard that sentence hundreds of times."

Jonathan quietly opened his briefcase.

Inside were copies of bank records.

Medical paperwork.

Trust documents.

Transfer confirmations.

He placed everything on the coffee table.

"The surgery fund," Jonathan said calmly, "was legally transferred three weeks ago into a protected medical trust."

Brandon blinked.

"What?"

Jonathan looked directly at him.

"There was never sixty-five thousand dollars inside that envelope."

Emily slowly unfolded the crumpled envelope.

Inside...

Blank printer paper.

Nothing else.

Brandon stared at it in disbelief.

"You tricked us."

"No," I answered.

"I gave you a chance to show me whether my life mattered."

No one had.
