Chapter 13 - NINETY DAYS

The ninety-day clause transformed a family scandal into a countdown.
Naomi read the trust provision three times before she spoke again.
"Eleanor wrote this to prevent anyone from manufacturing a paternity dispute and grabbing control during the confusion."
Leah looked at the loan schedule.
"But Graham found the weakness inside the protection."
"Exactly."
"If your voting shares lock, Richard loses the support that currently prevents his pledged block from becoming decisive."
"Northstar Recovery can accelerate the loan if certain governance conditions are triggered."
"One of those conditions is loss of stable voting control."
Leah almost admired the cruelty of it.
Graham Vale had not attacked Eleanor's trust directly.
He had built a financial trap around it.
Richard arrived at Naomi's office twenty minutes later.
When he heard the explanation, he looked physically ill.
"How much time before they can declare default?"
Naomi answered.
"If a paternity proceeding triggers the trust lock, they can issue notice immediately."
"The cure period is thirty days."
"Can we repay the loan?"
Richard gave a bitter laugh.
"Not without selling half the fleet or drawing against the operating line."
Evelyn, who had joined by video, shook her head.
"The operating line has a cross-default provision."
"If Northstar Recovery accelerates, the bank can freeze additional borrowing."
Leah stared at the numbers.
"How did this pass review?"
Evelyn's face tightened.
"The final loan package in the system is not the version I reviewed."
Richard looked at her.
"What?"
"My comments removed the governance default language."
"The executed copy put it back."
"Who sent the executed version?"
Evelyn checked her records.
"Arthur Bell."
Silence followed.
Leah stood and walked toward the window.
Richmond traffic moved below them as if the world were normal.
"So Arthur helps rush Bryce's promotion."
"Arthur handles the loan documents."
"Arthur communicates with Celeste about my trust."
"And Arthur may have been involved in Naomi's office break-in."
Naomi nodded.
"That is where the facts point."
Richard looked at Leah.
"What do we do?"
The question was new.
All her life, Richard had told her what should happen.
What school she should attend.
What career would be practical.
How long she should serve before doing something stable.
Whether she should come home for Christmas.
Now he was asking.
Leah did not enjoy the reversal as much as she thought she might.
"First, we stop lying to employees."
Richard stiffened.
"We can't announce a federal investigation."
"I didn't say we announce evidence."
"We announce governance changes."
"We tell them Bryce is suspended pending review."
"We tell them an independent audit is underway."
"And we tell them payroll and operations are secure."
Evelyn nodded.
"Rumors are already worse than that."
Richard looked uncertain.
"It could hurt client confidence."
Leah turned.
"Dad, client confidence is already being hurt by television crews outside the building."
"Silence doesn't look stable anymore."
It looks guilty."
Richard did not argue.
The company statement went out at 3:00 p.m.
It was short.
Mercer Logistics acknowledged an independent governance and financial review.
Bryce Mercer's executive appointment was suspended.
Operations would continue normally.
The company pledged full cooperation with lawful investigations.
For the first time, no one mentioned Leah's Army service.
No one used a flag.
No one used her photograph.
Leah insisted on that.
At 3:17, Bryce called her.
"You destroyed me."
Leah put the phone on speaker while Naomi listened.
"No."
"The statement doesn't accuse you of anything."
"Everyone knows what it means."
"Then maybe ask why they believe it so easily."
Bryce swore.
"My entire career is gone."
"Your career was built on a title you shouldn't have received and documents you shouldn't have signed."
"You think you're better than me because people salute you."
Leah closed her eyes.
After everything, Bryce still believed the problem was attention.
"No."
"I think you're dangerous because consequences have always arrived after someone else cleaned the room."
"Dad cleaned it."
"Your mother cleaned it."
"Assistants cleaned it."
"Lawyers cleaned it."
"And when a driver died, somebody cleaned that too."
Bryce went silent.
"I didn't kill him."
"Then stop behaving like accountability will."
She ended the call.
That evening, federal investigators executed search warrants at Arthur Bell's home and office.
They found no copy of Eleanor's missing trust file.
They did find encrypted communications with Graham Vale.
Hale could not share details.
He did share one fact.
Arthur had retained criminal counsel.
Celeste remained missing.
At 21:00, Leah finally returned to her hotel.
She had removed her shoes when someone knocked.
Naomi checked the hallway through the peephole.
A young man stood outside holding a courier envelope.
Hotel security escorted him in.
The envelope had no return address.
Inside was a flash drive and a typed note.
CAPTAIN MERCER,
YOUR STEPMOTHER IS NOT RUNNING FROM YOU.
SHE IS RUNNING FROM VALE.
IF YOU WANT HER ALIVE, WATCH THE FILE BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
Leah looked at Naomi.
"Could be malware."
"Probably is."
They called Hale.
The drive went to a federal forensic lab.
At 23:38, Hale called back.
"It's clean."
"Mostly."
"Mostly?"
"It contains one video."
"We isolated it."
"I'm sending you a secure link."
Leah opened it.
The video showed Celeste sitting in a hotel room.
No makeup.
Hair pulled back.
Eyes swollen from crying.
A timestamp showed the recording had been made that morning.
Celeste looked into the camera.
"Leah, if you're watching this, then Graham knows I kept copies."
She swallowed.
"I did terrible things because I thought I was protecting Bryce."
"Then I did worse things because I was protecting myself."
"But I did not plan Miguel Santos's death."
"I did not forge your letters."
"And I did not break into Naomi's office."
She looked toward something off camera.
"Arthur did."
Leah leaned closer.
Celeste continued.
"Graham wanted the original trust file because he believed Eleanor left evidence linking him to the first takeover attempt."
"He said if I helped him get control of Mercer Logistics, Bryce would run it."
"I believed him."
Her mouth twisted.
"That was stupid."
"Graham never intended Bryce to run anything."
"He intends to bankrupt the company, seize the freight terminals, and sell the land beneath them."
Richard, watching remotely, made a sound like he had been punched.
Celeste wiped her face.
"There is one document that can stop him."
"Eleanor had an option agreement with Daniel Wren."
"If Mercer Logistics ever faced a hostile seizure by a Northstar-related entity, Wren had the right to refinance the company before foreclosure."
Naomi stood abruptly.
"What?"
Celeste looked straight into the camera.
"The original is not in the safe-deposit box."
"Graham knows that."
"Arthur knows that."
"Richard had it last."
The video ended.
Everyone looked at Richard on the secure call.
His face had gone white.
May you like
"I burned it," he whispered.
