Chapter 12 - THE PACKAGE

Kelsey did not deny taking the courier package.

Her lawyer called Dana Moss before investigators had time to confront her.

By then, Kelsey understood that every lie she told could be compared against records Daniel had quietly built for weeks.

She requested a second proffer.

This time, Margaret allowed me to receive a summary afterward rather than sit in a hallway waiting for secrets about my own life.

I spent the morning with Grace.

She had begun finishing most of her bottles without needing the feeding tube.

The neonatologist said the word home for the first time.

“Not today.”

He smiled.

“But if she keeps this up, soon.”

Soon became the most beautiful word I had heard in weeks.

At 2:30, Margaret arrived with Dana Moss.

Dana closed the door to my hospital room.

“Kelsey says Richard ordered her to retrieve the package.”

I felt anger rise immediately.

“Did he order her to sign my name too?”

“Yes.”

Dana’s answer surprised me.

“She says he gave her the exact name to use.”

“Why would the courier release it to me?”

“Because Daniel had listed you as an alternate authorized recipient.”

“Then why disguise herself?”

“Kelsey says Richard told her the office had cameras and he did not want anyone recognizing his wife.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So she dressed like me by wearing sunglasses?”

“No.”

Dana looked down at her notes.

“She says he told her the signature was all that mattered.”

“What was in the package?”

“Kelsey claims she did not open it.”

“Do you believe her?”

“I do not have the luxury of belief.”

Margaret looked pleased by that answer.

“What did Richard do with it?”

“Kelsey says she handed it to him in his office at approximately 8:45.”
