Chapter 4 – The Only Harrington Who Had a Future
No one spoke as Brooke slowly stood.
Edward helped her into a warm coat.
She rested both hands over her baby.
"My daughter deserves better than hatred."
Connor hurried toward her.
"Brooke..."
"Please."
"I made a mistake."
She looked at him quietly.
"No."
"You made a choice."
His eyes filled with regret.
"I can fix this."
She smiled with heartbreaking kindness.
"Some things aren't meant to be repaired."
Richard stepped beside Brooke.
"The board meeting begins tomorrow morning."
He looked directly at Connor.
"I'm announcing my retirement."
Connor's eyes widened.
"Dad..."
Richard continued.
"I've already selected my successor."
Everyone held their breath.
Richard turned toward Brooke.
"If she'll accept."
Brooke hesitated.
Then slowly nodded.
"I will."
Evelyn collapsed back into her chair.
Vanessa silently removed the diamond bracelet from her wrist and placed it on the table before walking away without another word.
Connor remained standing alone in the middle of the dining room.
Watching the woman he had humiliated walk toward the front doors with dignity intact.
As Brooke reached the entrance, she paused without turning around.
"My daughter will carry the Harrington name."
"But she'll never inherit its arrogance."
The doors closed softly behind her.
One year later, Brooke welcomed a healthy baby girl and transformed Harrington Holdings into the most profitable company in its history.
Richard proudly watched from retirement as his granddaughter grew up surrounded by love instead of pride.
Connor spent years trying to earn forgiveness that never came.
And every winter, whenever snow covered the front steps of the mansion, the Harrington family remembered the night a bucket of ice water had washed away every illusion they had ever believed about power... and revealed the true owner of their future.
