Chapter 14 - CLAIRE'S RECEIPTS

Claire arrived at Maya's office carrying a red folder and wearing no engagement ring.

She looked at me first.

"I am sorry."

I was not expecting that.

"For what?"

"For thinking you came to destroy my life."

I looked at her.

"You had a rough Christmas too."

That made her laugh once.

"Understatement."

Daniel was not there.

Claire had specifically asked that he not attend.

I respected that.

Maya opened the red folder.

Inside were printed messages from Grant.

Months of them.

At first they looked harmless.

Advice about Margaret's preferences.

Suggestions for Christmas gifts.

Comments about Daniel being slow to commit.

Then they became more pointed.

A Hale Christmas proposal would mean a lot to the family.

Daniel needs stability this year.

Do not let old history keep him stuck.

Finally, a message from three weeks before Christmas.

Make sure he has the ring before the twenty-fifth.

Claire looked at me.

"I thought Grant was helping me."

"That seems to be how he operates."

She nodded.

"There is more."

She took out her phone.

"Two days before Christmas, Grant asked me whether Daniel had contacted you."

I frowned.

"He knew Daniel had the fake voicemail."

"I think so."

"What did you say?"

"That Daniel told me he needed to invite someone from his past because his mother requested it."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I was jealous."

"Reasonable."

"So Grant told me not to worry."

"Why?"

She looked directly at me.

"He said you had no children."

The room went still.

Maya leaned forward.

"Exact words?"

Claire opened the message.

Anna has no family ties to Daniel anymore.

This is closure, nothing else.

I stared at the screen.

Grant knew four children existed.

Yet he told Claire I had no family ties.

He was constructing the scene deliberately.

The abandoned ex-wife arrives.

The new fiancee is present.

The ring is ready.

The children become a shock.

The press receives a narrative of financial revenge.

Everything had been placed like furniture before we entered the room.

Claire pulled another paper from the folder.

"This is what I think matters most."

It was a receipt from a private voice synthesis company.

Maya's eyes sharpened.

"Where did you get this?"

"Grant accidentally forwarded it to me with a group of holiday planning receipts."

The invoice was for a custom voice model.

Source sample: M. Hale.

Delivery: secure audio file.

Date: two days before Daniel received the voicemail.

I felt goosebumps rise on my arms.

"He cloned Margaret's voice."

Maya nodded slowly.

"It appears so."

Claire looked sick.

"I did not understand what it was until I saw the news about the fake voicemail."

"This is excellent evidence."

"I hope so."

She looked at me again.

"There is something I want to ask."

"Okay."

"Did Daniel really not know?"

I thought carefully.

"He did not know the children were born."

"But he knew you were pregnant."

"Yes."

Claire nodded.

"That matters."

"Yes."

"He keeps saying he failed."

"He did."

"Do you think he can fix it?"

I looked at the folder.

The evidence.

The lies.

The eight missing years.

"No one fixes eight years."

Claire watched me.

"Then what can he do?"

"He can decide what he does with the next one."

She nodded.

"That sounds like you still care about him."

I almost laughed.

"Caring is not the same as trusting."

"I learned that this week."

We understood each other then.

Not as rivals.

As two women who had both discovered Daniel's family could turn private feelings into strategy.

Before she left, Claire handed me one more thing.

A small velvet ring box.

I stared at it.

"Why are you giving me that?"

"I am not."

She smiled faintly.

"I am giving it back to him through his lawyer."

"Then why show me?"

"Because you should know the ring was his grandmother's."

I frowned.

"I know."

"No."

Claire opened the box.

Inside was a large diamond surrounded by smaller stones.

I recognized it immediately.

Margaret had worn it for years.

Claire turned the box over.

There was an engraving beneath the velvet insert.

D.H. - A.B. - ALWAYS CHOOSE TRUTH.

My breath stopped.

"What is that?"

Claire looked confused.

"You do not know?"

I took the ring box.

The engraving had our initials.

Daniel Hale.

Anna Bennett.

And a phrase I had written inside our wedding vows.

Always choose truth.

I stared at Claire.

"This was not his grandmother's ring."

"Daniel told me it was."

"It was mine."

The room went silent.

I remembered the ring now.

Not as it looked today.

As it had looked eight years earlier when Daniel gave it to me on our third anniversary.

It was not an engagement ring.

It had been a family diamond reset into a simple band.

After the divorce, I left it in an envelope with his belongings.

I never saw it again.

Claire whispered,

"He was going to propose to me with your ring?"

I felt sick.

"I do not think he knew."

Maya immediately called Daniel.

He arrived twenty minutes later.

Claire had already left.

Maya placed the ring box on the table.

Daniel stopped walking.

"Where did you get that?"

"Claire."

His face went pale.

"She gave it back."

"Did you know this was Anna's ring?"

"No."

I watched him carefully.

He looked genuinely horrified.

"Where did you get it?"

"My mother gave it to me."

Of course.

"She said it was Grandma Eleanor's original stone reset years ago."

"It was."

I opened the box and showed him the engraving.

He sat down.

"I never looked under the insert."

I believed him.

Again, belief came with anger.

"Your family almost made you propose to another woman with a ring engraved with my name."

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

"This is beyond sick."

Maya's phone buzzed.

She read a message.

"Elise's DNA test is back."

Daniel looked up.

"And?"

"Lucas is not your son."

I exhaled.

"Is Grant the father?"

"The court-ordered comparison with Grant's sample has not happened yet."

"Then why did Elise say he is?"

Maya looked at us.

"Because she has photographs, messages, and a birth certificate draft Grant signed before changing his mind."

Daniel stared at the table.

"So Grant has a son."

"It appears so."

"And he tried to make his own son part of Daniel's trust," I said.

Maya nodded.

"Which may be fraud."

My phone buzzed with a news alert.

This one was different.

FEDERAL AGENTS SEARCH NORTHSTAR STRATEGIC SECURITY OFFICES.

Daniel looked at me.

Maya's phone rang immediately.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

"When?"

She listened.

"No, do not approach him."

She ended the call.

"Grant did not show up at Northstar this morning."

"Where is he?"

"Unknown."

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face drained of color.

"It is Grant."

Maya held up a hand.

"Do not answer without recording."

Daniel put it on speaker.

"Grant."

For several seconds, only static.

Then Grant's voice.

"You always were the sentimental one."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Where are you?"

Grant ignored the question.

"Tell Anna she should check the trust's original execution file."

I looked at Maya.

"Why?"

Grant laughed softly.

"Because everyone is fighting over thirty-one percent that may not belong to Daniel's children at all."

May you like

The line went dead.
