Chapter 2: The Daughter They Mocked

Across town...

Elara sat quietly beside the fireplace inside her father's penthouse.

Dry clothes replaced the ruined white dress.

A cup of untouched tea rested between her hands.

Across from her sat Victor Ashford.

One of the wealthiest investors in the country.

He had built fortunes quietly.

He preferred influence over publicity.

"I wanted you to choose your own life," Victor said softly.

"I never wanted my name to decide who loved you."

Elara smiled sadly.

"I thought Julian loved me."

"You warned me."

Victor nodded.

"I warned you about pride."

"I didn't warn you about weakness."

A knock interrupted them.

Arthur entered.

"They've been removed."

Victor looked up.

"Without incident?"

"Yes."

"The guests watched security escort the Whitmore family through the same front gate where Miss Elara was forced into the rain."

Arthur hesitated.

"Julian requested one meeting."

Elara remained silent.

Finally she spoke.

"No."

"He already made his choice."

Meanwhile...

Outside the locked estate...

Reporters surrounded Chloe and Julian.

Microphones stretched toward them.

"Is it true the Ashford family owns the mansion?"

"Were you evicted tonight?"

"Did you insult their daughter before losing everything?"

Chloe screamed at the cameras.

Julian said nothing.

For the first time in his privileged life...

He understood what public humiliation felt like.
