CHAPTER 1 — The Signature Lily Feared

Emily couldn't breathe.

The four words on the note blurred beneath her tears.

DON'T LET DADDY SIGN.

When she looked up, Mark had already recovered.

His face softened into the expression everyone expected from a grieving father.

"You should rest," he whispered.

But Emily heard something else.

Fear.

Not grief.

Fear.

That night, after everyone left the funeral home, Emily searched Mark's home office for the first time in seven years.

She had never invaded his privacy before.

Tonight, she wasn't searching for secrets.

She was searching for answers.

Inside the bottom drawer she found a locked metal box.

The key wasn't difficult to find.

Mark always hid it beneath the same family photo.

Inside the box lay copies of hospital paperwork.

Insurance forms.

Medical authorizations.

And one document that froze her blood.

Guardianship Transfer Agreement.

The signature line for Lily was blank.

But Mark's signature was already there.

Beside it sat another document.

A trust worth eight million dollars.

It had belonged to Emily's late father.

She had completely forgotten one condition buried inside the will.

If Lily survived until her eighth birthday...

Every dollar would legally belong to her.

But if Lily died before turning eight...

Control of the trust transferred to her surviving legal guardian.

Mark.

Emily's hands began shaking.

Lily hadn't been warning her about hospital paperwork.

She had been warning her about that signature.

Just then, Emily heard the front door open.

Mark was home.

She barely had time to return everything before he stepped into the office.

"You've been crying," he said.

Emily forced herself to smile.

"I miss our daughter."

Mark nodded.

"So do I."

It was the perfect answer.

Too perfect.

For the first time...

Emily wondered if she had ever truly known the man she married.
