Chapter 15 - SARAH'S CHOICE

For several seconds, nobody in the command vehicle spoke.

Sarah had just handed Thomas Bell a key.

The man who took Emily.

The man whose name appeared throughout the archive.

The man Reed called Shield.

I felt anger rise before reason could catch it.

"She's working with him."

Ruiz grabbed my arm.

"No conclusions."

"She handed him the key."

"We don't know what key."

"We know what he wants."

"We know what we think he wants."

The distinction infuriated me.

Then Sarah moved.

She stepped closer to Bell and said something.

Bell looked toward the terminal doors.

Sarah moved one hand behind her back.

Two fingers extended.

Then three.

Then one.

Ruiz inhaled sharply.

"She's signaling."

"What?"

"Old police hand code."

"How would Sarah know that?"

"Your mother-in-law worked with my father."

Of course.

Every new answer created an older connection.

Ruiz watched Sarah's fingers again.

"Three-one."

"What does that mean?"

"Third exit, first level."

The terminal had three exits.

The first level included a maintenance corridor leading to the river dock.

"She wants us to watch the dock."

Ruiz shifted the team quietly.

No raid.

No sirens.

We watched.

Bell held the key Sarah gave him and walked toward a metal case on a table.

He opened it.

Inside was an electronic reader.

He inserted the key.

A screen lit.

ERROR.

Bell's face changed.

Sarah stepped backward.

He realized she had given him the wrong key.

Then everything happened quickly.

Bell lunged.

Sarah threw the table into him and ran toward the first exit.

Ruiz shouted into the radio.

"Go!"

Teams entered from two sides.

Bell fired one shot into the ceiling and ran for the dock.

Sarah disappeared through the maintenance corridor.

I moved before anyone could stop me.

Ruiz grabbed my jacket.

"No."

"She's there."

"And armed teams are between you and her."

"Emily isn't there."

That stopped both of us.

If Bell had Sarah but not Emily, then where was my daughter?

The terminal was secured in four minutes.

Bell reached the dock but found a state boat waiting beyond the pilings.

He surrendered after realizing every exit was blocked.

Sarah was found inside the maintenance corridor.

Alive.

Bruised.

Exhausted.

But standing.

When she saw me, she stopped.

So did I.

Four years of divorce vanished for one strange second.

There was only the woman I had once promised to grow old beside.

Then Sarah crossed the room and grabbed me.

"Emily?"

"Bell took her."

Sarah pulled back.

"No."

"A trooper identified him."

"No."

Her face changed.

"Bell didn't take her."

"What?"

"He told me Reed had her."

Ruiz stepped closer.

"Bell impersonated a state supervisor."

Sarah shook her head.

"Bell was with me at that time."

"Where?"

"In the river tunnel."

Ruiz looked at Hale.

Timeline.

The abduction footage showed Keene being approached at 8:43.

Sarah said Bell met her in the river tunnel at 8:35 and stayed until nearly nine.

Could she prove it?

Yes.

A transit maintenance camera showed Bell entering with Sarah at 8:37.

He could not have been at the state facility six miles away six minutes later.

Keene had identified the wrong man.

Or someone made sure he would.

Ruiz showed Sarah a photo of Reed.

"No."

"Who else resembles Bell?"

Sarah looked at the image again.

Then at me.

"Pike."

Warren Pike had gray hair.

Similar age.

Similar build.

But Pike had supposedly been bound at the cabin.

Except the only people who confirmed when he was bound were Nicole and Jason.

Pike could have left earlier.

He could have staged his own captivity later.

The network specialized in controlled appearances.

We rushed back to the hospital where Pike was being guarded.

His room was empty.

A nurse lay unconscious in a supply closet.

The guard had been sent to another floor by a fake supervisor message.

Pike was gone.

Sarah leaned against the wall.

"He has Emily."

"How do you know?"

"Because Pike was the only one who knew what she meant to Reed."

"What does that mean?"

Sarah looked at Ruiz.

"Reed doesn't want the third key."

"Then what does he want?"

"He wants Mother destroyed."

That surprised everyone.

"Why?"

"Because the network destroyed his family too."

Sarah told us what she learned while Reed held her.

Calvin Reed had entered the network as an investigator doing jobs for Pike.

Years earlier, his younger brother lost a building through a manipulated tax seizure.

Reed discovered Meridian profited.

He tried to investigate.

Bell threatened his career.

Pike offered money.

Margaret Monroe offered access.

Reed chose access.

He told himself he was infiltrating the system.

Then he began using it.

The line between revenge and power disappeared.

By the time Sarah uncovered him, Reed no longer wanted justice.

He wanted everyone who had controlled him to lose everything.

"Then why take me?" Sarah asked.

"Because I had Linda's key."

"And because I knew the archive existed."

"But Pike wanted something else."

"Control."

Pike wanted all three keys so he could become Mother.

Bell wanted the archive destroyed before federal investigators saw his history.

Reed wanted to burn the network down publicly.

Three men who had once cooperated were now fighting over the same machine.

Sarah had been trapped between them.

"What key did you give Bell?" Ruiz asked.

Sarah almost smiled.

"Old gym locker key."

Despite everything, I laughed once.

It came out broken.

"Where is Linda's key?"

Sarah looked at me.

"Emily has it."

My blood froze.

"What?"

"I hid it in her bracelet."

"When?"

"The morning before Jason locked her outside."

"Why would you put it on her?"

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I thought Jason would search me."

"You made her a target."

The words came out harder than I intended.

Sarah flinched.

"I know."

"You put the key on our daughter."

"I thought nobody knew."

"Reed knew."

"No."

"Pike knew."

"I don't know how."

I turned away.

Anger was easier than fear.

Sarah spoke behind me.

"David, I made the worst decision of my life because I thought I was protecting her."

I looked back.

"So did I when I waited three days to drive over."

Neither of us had room to judge the other cleanly.

Ruiz interrupted.

"What does the key look like?"

"Small brass insert inside a silver charm."

"Shape?"

"A heart."

I remembered Emily wearing a new charm bracelet Thursday.

She said her mother gave it to her.

I never asked why.

Pike had Emily because he needed that key.

The first authorization key.

But to control MOTHER completely, he needed three.

Where were the other two?

Margaret Monroe's key disappeared after her death.

Eleanor Voss still had hers, unless someone had taken it.

Sarah had Linda's.

Or rather Emily did.

"Pike has one key if he takes Emily's," Ruiz said.

"He still needs two."

Sarah shook her head.

"He already has Margaret's."

"How?"

"Jason gave it to him."

We all turned toward Jason's interrogation feed.

Jason admitted it.

Margaret left her key hidden in a safety deposit box.

Jason inherited the box.

He never understood what the key did until Pike explained it.

Pike had two keys now if he reached Emily's bracelet.

He needed only Eleanor Voss's.

And Eleanor was missing.

Three hostages.

One eighty-two-year-old woman.

One ten-year-old girl.

And possibly Pike's own future if he failed.

Sarah closed her eyes.

"He'll bring them together."

"Where?" I asked.

She looked at me.

"Where Mother started."

St. Catherine's.

But not the current hospital.

The original MOTHER program had not started in the medical center itself.

It started in a community outreach building the hospital closed twenty years earlier.

The old St. Catherine's Annex on River Street.

A building scheduled for demolition the next morning.

Pike had chosen a place that was about to disappear.

May you like

And we had less than eight hours before it did.
