Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

I wanted to call Michael and demand an explanation.
Allison asked me not to.
"Let the records speak before he knows precisely what we know," she said.
So we worked.
I located the old fundraising account and preserved the messages I could access without changing anything.
I provided account-history information through the appropriate investigative channels.
I also requested copies of credit reports and learned there were unfamiliar inquiries associated with my name.
Allison referred me to professionals who could address potential identity misuse and help protect both me and Emily.
Rachel helped me organize the paperwork into folders marked MEDICAL, HOME, FINANCIAL, and COURT.
It was the least glamorous revolution in history.
We bought tabs, made copies, and checked dates.
Nobody gave a speech.
Nobody burst through a door with handcuffs.
Yet for the first time, I could see the shape of Michael's control from the outside.
It depended on isolation.
Every piece of paper connected me to someone else who could verify my reality.
Kevin Marsh confirmed through his own records that unusual scheduling changes had been made after hours under credentials he disputed using.
Marian's audit records identified some transactions that needed further review.
Rose Ellis provided her invoices and proof of her husband's death.
Rachel supplied building access logs and a written account of Michael's visits.
I supplied the threatening messages and the documents I did not remember signing.
Allison coordinated the civil and family matters while investigators handled potential criminal allegations.
It was slow.
It was imperfect.
It was real.
Then Caroline contacted Detective Collins through an attorney.
She admitted she'd delivered flowers to the hospital on Daniel's behalf.
She also claimed she had been instructed to frighten us, although that statement would have to be tested against independent evidence.
More importantly, she had saved an internal email directing staff to create a narrative that Sarah Bennett was mentally unfit and Emily was easily manipulated.
The email predated Emily's emergency surgery.
When Collins told me the general nature of the information, my hands went numb.
Michael and Daniel had apparently been preparing to undermine us before we understood there was a fight.
By evening, the company placed Daniel on administrative leave pending its investigation.
A reporter left a message asking whether I wanted to comment.
I declined.
Emily was still recovering, and I refused to turn her into the public face of a scandal she hadn't chosen.
Instead, I went to her room with a paperback novel and sat beside her while she slept.
Around nine, Michael sent a voicemail.
His voice shook.
"Sarah, Daniel's going to tell them I did everything. You know me. You know I'd never hurt our little girl."
I listened once.
Then he said the sentence that ended any desire I still had to rescue him.
"If you can get Emily to say she misunderstood, I can still protect us."
May you like
Even now, he wanted our daughter to carry the cost.
