Chapter 7 - The Woman in the Red Coat

There are threats that work because they sound familiar.

Tiffany knew how afraid I was of losing her.

For years, she'd used distance as punishment whenever I said no to her husband.

This time I refused to make decisions under a threat.

I wrote back, I love you. I will protect myself and tell the truth.

Then I showed the exchange to Rebecca.

She advised me to keep communications factual and to avoid any secret investigation that might endanger me or compromise records.

We made a formal report about the suspected identity misuse and provided the lender correspondence.

The officer taking the report was courteous but careful.

He promised no dramatic arrest or overnight solution.

Evidence would have to be reviewed.

A few days later, Tiffany asked to meet at a public café.

She arrived alone, carrying her purse so tightly that the strap had marked her palm.

“I think Harry's seeing somebody,” she whispered.

I didn't say I suspected the same.

She showed me a photograph on her phone.

Harry stood outside a commercial building with a dark-haired woman in a red coat.

Tiffany had taken it from an online property listing.

“Her name is Vanessa Pike,” she said.

Vanessa was a real-estate broker based in Missoula.

I asked Tiffany whether she'd spoken with her.

“No. Harry says she's only advising him on investments.”

“What investments?”

“That's what I keep asking.”

Tiffany stirred her coffee without drinking it.

“He told me our future depended on getting your signature.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What exactly did he ask you to do?”

She closed her eyes.

“To convince you the house should be put into a family trust.”

“A trust controlled by whom?”

“He said it would protect everybody.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“I know.”

For the first time, Tiffany looked more frightened than defensive.

Then she told me about the night Harry had spread papers across the dining table.

He'd placed yellow tabs beside lines where he said I needed to sign.

When she worried that I might refuse, he told her to be firm.

“He said you only understand consequences,” she murmured.

I remembered her ultimatum.

The words sounded different now, like something someone had rehearsed for her.

“Did he tell you to throw me out?”

She gave a small nod.

I felt the answer hit somewhere deep beneath anger.

“Why did you do it?”

“Because he said you'd never really leave.”

She began crying quietly, but she did not apologize.

I let her have the silence.

Then her phone buzzed.

She looked down and stood so quickly that her chair scraped the floor.

“Harry found my backup phone.”

“What backup phone?”

“The one with the messages.”

She backed toward the door.

“He thinks I sent you everything.”

Before I could rise, Tiffany whispered one last sentence.

“If Vanessa isn't just his broker, I think she's the person who wrote the documents.”
