Chapter 2: The Family Falls Apart

Chapter 2: The Family Falls Apart

No one touched the Christmas dinner.

The turkey grew cold.

The candles continued burning as though nothing had happened.

Rebecca calmly placed another folder beside the first.

"This contains the emergency court order."

Dad grabbed it.

His hands trembled so violently he nearly dropped every page.

Chelsea rushed toward him.

"There has to be some mistake."

"There isn't," Rebecca answered.

"The judge signed it this morning."

Every property purchased with trust assets was temporarily frozen.

Every financial account connected to the estate would be audited.

Every transfer dating back eighteen years would be examined.

Mom slowly sank into her chair.

"I didn't know..."

Rebecca looked directly at her.

"Mrs. Harrison..."

"We have your signatures."

Mom's eyes widened.

"My husband handled everything."

"You signed every annual distribution."

She covered her mouth.

For the first time in my life...

I realized she hadn't been protecting peace.

She had been protecting herself.

Dad suddenly exploded.

"This family owes me everything!"

"No," I answered quietly.

"You owed your father honesty."

Maisie stood silently beside me.

Still holding the wrinkled place card.

Rebecca noticed it.

"What happened?"

No one answered.

Finally...

Maisie whispered,

"Grandpa said I wasn't real family."

Rebecca looked slowly around the room.

Every adult lowered their eyes.

The court officers exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Rebecca closed the folders.

"I'll include that in today's statement."

Dad's head snapped upward.

"What?"

"The physical assault."

"The emotional harm to a minor."

"The hostile environment."

Chelsea's confidence vanished completely.

"This wasn't supposed to happen."

I looked at her.

"No."

"You just never expected anyone to stop you."
