Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO RAN

Jasmine reached the hallway before Samuel could stop her.
I followed with Rebecca, Daniel, and Aaron only a few steps behind.
She was already at the elevator, stabbing the button with one finger while speaking rapidly into her phone.
"I need the car now."
Aaron called her name.
She looked over her shoulder.
Something in her face had changed completely.
The flirtation was gone.
The polished confidence was gone.
Even the fear was gone.
What remained was calculation.
The elevator opened.
She stepped inside.
Aaron reached the doors before they closed.
"Where are you going?"
"Away from this circus."
"We just found forty-four million dollars moved under our names."
"Then ask your finance department."
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
"You opened the account."
"I helped form a treasury subsidiary."
"Without board approval."
"Aaron approved the structure."
Aaron stepped into the elevator.
"I did not approve those transfers."
Jasmine met his eyes.
"You approved enough."
The words stopped him.
Rebecca touched my arm.
"Don't get in."
I understood why.
This was no longer a marital confrontation.
Anything said now might matter later.
Samuel called resort security from the hallway.
He did not ask them to detain Jasmine.
He asked them to preserve company devices and prevent removal of corporate records subject to the board's hold.
The distinction mattered.
The elevator doors closed with Aaron and Jasmine inside.
I looked at Daniel.
"Can she move the money?"
"Not if the bank responds to the freeze request."
"How long?"
"Minutes if we're lucky."
"And if we're not?"
He did not answer.
We took the stairs.
By the time we reached the lobby, rain was blowing sideways against the glass entrance.
Jasmine was standing near the front doors shouting at a driver.
"I don't care if the pass is restricted. Take the lower road."
The driver shook his head.
"Ma'am, county patrol closed both roads because of a mudslide."
"Then find another route."
"There isn't one."
Aaron stood ten feet away from her.
For the first time, he looked like a man who understood he had invited a stranger into every room that mattered.
Jasmine turned and saw me.
"Happy now?"
I stopped.
"No."
"You trapped me here."
"I don't control the weather."
"You control everything else, apparently."
"That's the story you told the press."
Her expression shifted.
That was confirmation enough.
Aaron heard it too.
"You leaked the article?"
Jasmine turned toward him.
"I protected myself."
"By telling reporters my wife was unstable?"
For one bitter second, I almost laughed at the sudden outrage.
He had called me emotional in front of the board less than twelve hours earlier.
But hearing his own words weaponized publicly against him had apparently changed their meaning.
"You said those things," Jasmine replied.
Aaron went still.
"Privately."
"That makes them untrue?"
He looked at me.
I looked away.
There are apologies that arrive too late to be spoken.
The resort's security director approached.
"Ms. Vale, your company laptop and access badge are subject to a preservation notice."
Jasmine clutched her bag.
"My laptop contains personal information."
Melissa Grant had arrived behind us.
"Company-issued device."
"I need counsel."
"You are entitled to contact counsel."
"Then no one touches anything until I do."
"We can secure the device without reviewing it."
Jasmine looked toward the doors again.
The storm had made the decision for her.
She took out her phone.
"Fine."
Then Leah Benton appeared from the corridor leading to the event rooms.
She looked pale.
"Mrs. Prescott."
I turned.
"What is it?"
Leah glanced at Jasmine.
"Can I speak to you?"
Jasmine's eyes sharpened.
I walked several feet away with Leah.
"What happened?"
"I saw her in the business center twenty minutes ago."
"Jasmine?"
"Yes."
"Doing what?"
Leah lowered her voice.
"She handed an envelope to Nolan Price."
The name hit Daniel before it hit me.
"Nolan from information security?"
Leah nodded.
Daniel swore.
Nolan Price was Prescott Systems' deputy chief information security officer.
He had access to certificate systems.
Authentication logs.
Credential recovery tools.
Exactly the systems someone would need to clone executive approvals.
"Where is he?" Melissa asked.
Leah pointed toward the east wing.
"He went toward the parking garage."
Daniel pulled out his phone.
"His badge needs to be disabled now."
Aaron stared at him.
"Are you sure?"
Daniel looked at Jasmine.
"No."
Then he looked back at Aaron.
"But I'm sure enough to protect the system."
Melissa called security operations.
Within two minutes, Nolan's company access was suspended.
Within five, the security team confirmed his assigned vehicle had left the resort forty minutes earlier, before the roads closed.
Within eight, we learned he had not checked out.
He had simply gone.
Jasmine stood near the front desk pretending not to listen.
I walked toward her.
"What was in the envelope?"
She stared at me.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Leah saw you hand Nolan Price an envelope."
Her eyes flicked toward Leah.
"Then Leah is mistaken."
Leah stepped forward.
"I'm not."
Jasmine smiled coldly.
"You should be careful accusing executives of misconduct, Leah."
That old threat still came naturally to her.
Leah's face changed.
Then she looked at me.
I understood exactly what Jasmine was doing.
She was reminding everyone that she still had a title.
I turned to Melissa.
"Can she retaliate against an employee who cooperates with an audit?"
Melissa's answer was immediate.
"No."
Jasmine's smile disappeared.
"I wasn't threatening anyone."
"Good," I said.
"Then there is no problem."
Aaron rubbed both hands over his face.
"This has gone too far."
Daniel stared at him.
"Forty-four million dollars went through unauthorized accounts."
"I know."
"Then stop saying the investigation has gone too far."
Aaron lowered his hands.
"I mean all of it."
He looked at Jasmine.
"The leak. The nursery. The contracts."
Jasmine's expression hardened.
"Don't act like you were dragged into this."
"Into what?"
"You wanted the restructuring."
"I wanted international tax efficiency."
"You wanted Alyssa's trust neutralized."
The lobby went silent around us.
Aaron's face changed.
"Keep your voice down."
Jasmine laughed.
"Now you care about volume?"
She looked at me.
"Ask him."
I said nothing.
"Ask your husband what he called the Whitmore block in our meetings."
Aaron stepped toward her.
"Jasmine."
"Ask him."
I looked at Aaron.
"What did you call it?"
He did not answer.
Jasmine did.
"The leash."
Something inside me tightened.
She continued.
"He said he was tired of building an empire with your dead father's leash around his neck."
Aaron's face went white.
"Stop."
"Why?"
She was angry now.
Dangerously angry.
"You told me once we moved the IP and diluted the trust, you would finally be free."
I stared at him.
"Is that true?"
"Not the way she's saying it."
"What way did you say it?"
He looked away.
That was enough.
Jasmine took out her phone.
"I have messages."
Aaron's head snapped toward her.
"What messages?"
"All of them."
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid of her.
She smiled.
"Did you think I trusted you?"
He stared at her.
"You recorded me?"
"I kept records."
"Of private conversations?"
"Of promises."
I felt almost detached watching them.
The affair that had humiliated me was collapsing under the same lack of trust that created it.
Aaron believed Jasmine adored him.
Jasmine believed Aaron would discard her once she stopped being useful.
Both had apparently been correct.
A member of the security team returned.
"Ms. Vale, we need the company laptop."
She removed it from her bag and handed it over.
Then she kept hold of the strap.
"I want a receipt."
"Of course."
She released it.
The security officer examined the asset tag.
His eyebrows drew together.
"This isn't your assigned laptop."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What?"
The officer read the number aloud.
Daniel pulled up the asset database on his phone.
"That's a loaner from the product team."
Everyone looked at Jasmine.
Melissa's voice was calm.
"Where is your assigned device?"
Jasmine said nothing.
"Jasmine," Aaron said.
"Where is it?"
She smiled faintly.
"Ask Nolan."
Aaron took a step toward her.
Samuel blocked him.
"Don't."
Jasmine lifted her chin.
"I want my attorney."
"Call one," Melissa said.
She did.
We left her in the lobby with security and walked into a private conference room.
Daniel was already calling the information-security team.
"If Nolan has her actual laptop, assume the local drive contains copies of executive communications."
Melissa looked at him.
"Can he erase company servers from it?"
"Not after we disabled his account."
"Can he erase the laptop?"
"Yes."
Rebecca spoke.
"Then send a preservation demand to him personally."
Melissa nodded.
Aaron stood near the window, staring at the storm.
I watched him for a while.
Finally, he turned.
"You knew about the leak before I did."
"I suspected it."
"And the nursery."
"I learned about it today."
His face tightened.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
The question was so astonishing that the room seemed to pause around it.
"Come to you?"
"Before activating the trust."
"I did come to you."
He frowned.
"When?"
"On the plane."
He stared at me.
"I told you someone was in my seat."
His expression hardened.
"That's not the same thing."
"No."
I nodded.
"It was smaller."
He looked confused.
"But your response told me exactly what would happen if I brought you something bigger."
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
My phone rang.
It was Rebecca's office.
She answered on speaker.
Her associate spoke quickly.
"We have movement on the offshore account."
Daniel stood.
"What kind of movement?"
"An outbound wire was initiated nine minutes ago."
"Amount?"
"Thirty-nine million dollars."
Daniel swore.
"Destination?"
"A private bank in Singapore."
Aaron turned toward the door.
"Jasmine."
Rebecca's associate interrupted.
"The wire was stopped."
Everyone froze.
"How?" Daniel asked.
"The bank's compliance team placed a hold after receiving the board's preservation notice."
I exhaled for what felt like the first time in a minute.
Then the associate continued.
"But the transfer instruction was authenticated three minutes after Nolan Price left the resort."
Daniel looked at Melissa.
"He still has a token."
"Whose?"
The answer came from the phone.
"Aaron Prescott's."
Aaron went white.
Then Rebecca's associate added one more detail.
"And the beneficiary name on the Singapore account is not Jasmine Vale."
I looked at the phone.
"Whose is it?"
May you like
A pause.
"Eleanor Prescott."
