Chapter 5 - The Pickup List

The school had refused Vanessa's request.

That should have been the end of it.

It wasn't.

By the time I reached the campus, Vanessa had already told the receptionist that Adrian had emergency custody and that I was unstable after the hearing.

The principal brought me into a quiet office and played the recorded front-desk conversation.

Vanessa sounded composed, almost concerned.

Every accusation had been delivered like an inconvenient fact.

"We have a court order?" I asked.

The principal shook her head.

"No one presented one."

I thanked her for following the authorized pickup list and provided our attorney's direct number.

Ethan waited with his teacher, reading a book about bridges.

I didn't tell him a story designed to frighten him.

I told him an adult had tried to change the pickup arrangement without permission, and the school had kept him safe.

"Was it Vanessa?" he asked.

I met his eyes.

"Yes."

He thought for a moment.

"She doesn't know my teacher's name."

It was such a small observation, yet it broke my heart.

He had noticed how little attention she paid to him.

Outside, Adrian was standing beside his car.

"This is ridiculous," he said before I reached him.

"Vanessa was doing me a favor."

"You don't have a custody order authorizing her to collect Ethan."

He gave an impatient shrug.

"You're turning my son against me."

The word my son came so easily to him now that control was at stake.

Claire arrived and calmly documented the exchange.

She told Adrian any future pickup changes would require mutual written agreement or a court directive.

He laughed at her formality.

Then he asked whether I really thought a judge would take instructions from a seven-year-old.

Ethan was already in the backseat and couldn't hear him.

I was grateful for that.

That evening a temporary family-court order preserved Ethan's routine pending further proceedings.

There was no dramatic victory, just paperwork that made the next day safer.

Meanwhile Jonah found that Northline's payments had been matched by vendor credits at a second company called Harborstone Holdings.

Harborstone owned the apartment where Vanessa lived.

It also held the lease on Celeste's penthouse.

The corporate fraud was not an abstract threat anymore.

It was surrounding the people who had mocked my son at breakfast.

Before midnight, a courier delivered a legal notice to my door.

Adrian was seeking emergency guardianship of Ethan's financial interests.

The petition alleged that I was exploiting our son for control of Voss Meridian.

Attached was a sworn statement from the one person I never expected to see supporting him.

My father's longtime personal assistant, Rose Whitfield.
