Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO WATCHED THEM GROW

The Northstar contract began three years earlier with a photograph of me carrying two toddlers out of a pediatric clinic.
Evelyn had ordered what the firm called lineage verification.
The phrase made Amelia swear under her breath.
The first invoice was twenty-five thousand dollars.
The second was forty.
By the time Luca saw the twins in the restaurant, Evelyn had spent more than three hundred thousand dollars tracking my movements, documenting the children's appearances, collecting public records, and quietly researching whether their ages could align with the end of my marriage.
She knew before Luca knew.
She knew for years.
That truth changed the shape of everything.
"Why wouldn't she tell him?" Mara asked.
We sat in Amelia's office surrounded by copies of Northstar reports.
"If she was scared the kids were his, why wait?"
Amelia turned another page.
"Because knowledge can be more valuable than disclosure."
"That sounds like something Bianca would say."
"Which may be the point."
One Northstar report included an analysis of the Moretti succession trust.
Another contained estimates of how legal recognition of two biological children could alter future voting control.
A third evaluated my finances.
Income.
Mortgage.
Retirement account.
Even the approximate value of my car.
The report concluded I showed no pattern consistent with preparing a financial claim against Luca.
That should have made me feel vindicated.
Instead, it made me furious that strangers had needed to decide whether my ordinary life was suspicious.
Then Amelia reached the section marked FAMILY CONTACT.
Her face changed.
"Nia."
"What?"
She handed me the page.
Northstar had identified Mara, my mother, the twins' pediatrician, their preschool, and two neighbors.
Beside each name was a risk score for potential disclosure.
My mother was labeled LOW ACCESS, HIGH EMOTION.
Mara was labeled HIGH ACCESS, HIGH HOSTILITY.
I almost laughed because at least Northstar got Mara right.
Then I saw the final name.
DR. ELLEN RAMSEY - NEONATOLOGIST.
My lungs locked.
Northstar had found the doctor who cared for Leo and Lia in the NICU.
"How?"
Amelia shook her head.
"We don't know yet."
"Those records are private."
"The doctor's employment history is public."
"But how did they know which doctor?"
Amelia kept reading.
Then she stopped.
"There is a source code."
"What does that mean?"
"It means Northstar marked where the information came from."
"And?"
She looked at me.
"MHF."
Moretti Heritage Foundation.
Bianca's foundation.
The same organization that paid Marianne Holt's husband's company.
Evelyn had hired the investigators.
Bianca's organization had fed them information.
They were not separate actors.
They were partners.
My phone rang.
Luca.
I answered.
"Did you see the Northstar file?"
"I am looking at it."
His voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Empty.
"I found the same source code."
"Your foundation."
"My mother's foundation."
"You funded it."
Silence.
"Yes."
The guilt in one syllable was enormous.
"Luca, do not do that."
"Do what?"
"Make every terrible thing they did something you caused because your money touched it."
He went quiet.
I could not believe I was comforting him.
I corrected myself.
"You are responsible for your choices."
"I know."
"They are responsible for theirs."
"I know."
"And if you say you know one more time, I am hanging up."
A tired laugh escaped him.
"Understood."
That was better.
"Where is Evelyn?"
"Still at my mother's house."
"And you?"
"At a hotel."
I blinked.
"You left your own house?"
"I will not sleep under the same roof with someone who tracked children for three years."
"You could have made her leave."
"I could have."
"Why didn't you?"
His answer came slowly.
"Because I am trying to stop deciding that my power automatically gives me the right to control every room."
That sentence stayed with me.
It was small.
It was not redemption.
It was evidence of effort.
"The hearing is Monday," I said.
"I know."
I waited.
He caught himself.
"Sorry."
I smiled despite everything.
Then he said, "Northstar has video."
The smile disappeared.
"What kind of video?"
"School pickup."
My stomach dropped.
"How much?"
"Hours."
"Of the children?"
"Yes."
I stood.
"I want every copy destroyed."
"So do I."
"After evidence preservation."
"Yes."
He hesitated.
"There is something else in one clip."
"What?"
"A woman meeting the investigator outside the school."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Evelyn?"
"No."
"Bianca?"
"No."
"Then who?"
"Someone I haven't seen in years."
His voice hardened.
"My former executive assistant, Claire Donnelly."
I remembered Claire.
She had managed Luca's calendar during the final two years of our marriage.
She was the person who scheduled London, Denver, and Palm Beach.
The trips Marianne said aligned suspiciously with my fertility windows.
"Where is she now?"
"She left Moretti Global after our divorce."
"For where?"
"The Moretti Heritage Foundation."
Of course she did.
"Working for Bianca."
"Until last year."
"Why did she leave?"
"No reason in the file."
"Find her."
The command came from me this time.
Luca noticed.
"Legally?"
"Do not enjoy this."
"I am not."
He definitely was, a little.
Marco found Claire before sunset.
She was not hiding.
She taught administrative courses at a community college in Wisconsin and lived with her wife outside Madison.
When Luca's attorney contacted her, she refused to speak to him.
When Amelia contacted her on my behalf, Claire called within ten minutes.
Her first words were, "I have been waiting for Nia to find me."
We arranged a video call.
Claire appeared on screen with short gray hair and no makeup.
She looked directly at me.
"I owe you an apology."
"You can start with the truth."
"Fair."
She folded her hands.
"Bianca told me your marriage was making Luca unstable."
I laughed bitterly.
"That word again."
"She said the fertility treatments had become obsessive and that Luca needed separation to think clearly."
"So you scheduled trips."
"Yes."
"Did you know they matched my fertility calendar?"
Claire looked ashamed.
"Not initially."
"When did you realize?"
"After Palm Beach."
"And you kept doing it."
"Once more."
"Why?"
"Because Bianca threatened my job."
Mara groaned from the chair beside me.
"Everyone in this story had a reason."
Claire heard her.
"Reasons are not excuses."
That made Mara go quiet.
I asked about the pregnancy letter.
Claire's eyes filled.
"I never saw it."
"But you worked in Luca's office."
"Bianca bypassed me."
"Why?"
"Because by then I had started questioning her."
Claire took a breath.
"Three days before your divorce became final, Luca asked me to arrange a private meeting with Dr. Keene."
My heart jumped.
"The fertility specialist?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"He told me something about the clinic's story did not make sense."
I could barely breathe.
"Did the meeting happen?"
"No."
"Who canceled it?"
"Bianca."
"How?"
"She told me Luca had changed his mind."
"Did you confirm with him?"
Claire looked down.
"No."
I shut my eyes.
Another missed door.
Another chance stolen by one person's certainty and another person's obedience.
"What happened next?"
"Luca left for New York for two days."
I remembered that trip.
He returned colder.
Three days later, he told me the marriage was over.
"Why did New York matter?"
Claire hesitated.
"Because he did not go alone."
I opened my eyes.
"Who went with him?"
"Bianca."
"And?"
Claire looked straight at me.
"Evelyn Shaw."
The room went silent.
"Luca says he did not know Evelyn then."
"He didn't."
"Then why was she traveling with him?"
"He thought she was a foundation consultant."
My skin crawled.
Claire continued.
"Bianca introduced Evelyn as someone helping restructure the family foundation."
"What happened in New York?"
"I don't know everything."
"Tell me what you do know."
"Bianca arranged a dinner."
"With Luca and Evelyn."
"Yes."
"Before he left me."
"Yes."
My chest hurt.
It should not have mattered after six years.
It did.
"Did he have an affair?"
Claire shook her head quickly.
"Not that I ever saw."
"Then why introduce them?"
"Because Bianca wanted Luca to see a different future."
The phrase made me sick.
"A replacement wife."
"I think so."
"Did Evelyn know that was the plan?"
Claire's silence answered.
"Did she?"
"Yes."
Mara stood up.
"So Evelyn auditioned for Nia's marriage before the divorce was final."
Claire winced.
"That is a cruel way to say it."
"Good."
Mara folded her arms.
"Cruel is accurate."
I asked the question that mattered most.
"Why were you meeting Northstar outside my children's school last year?"
Claire's face changed.
"Because I was trying to stop them."
"Explain."
"I had left the foundation by then."
"Why?"
"I found a Northstar invoice labeled Carter Lineage."
My stomach tightened.
"You knew they were following us."
"I suspected."
"Why didn't you call me?"
Claire's eyes filled.
"I was ashamed."
I laughed once.
"That excuse has cost me six years already."
"I know."
"Then do better."
She nodded.
"I confronted the investigator and told him I would report the contract if he contacted the school or children directly."
"Did he?"
"Not then."
"And the GPS tracker?"
"I knew nothing about that."
Amelia leaned into view.
"Would you testify Monday?"
Claire went pale.
"Against Bianca?"
"About what you personally saw and did."
Claire stared down at her hands.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then she looked at me.
"Yes."
The next morning, the school principal called.
A man had arrived claiming to be authorized by the Moretti family office to pick up Leo and Lia.
He had copies of their birth certificates.
He knew their classroom numbers.
He knew my signature.
And he carried a letter that appeared to authorize immediate release of the children to him.
The letter had my name typed at the bottom.
The signature was almost perfect.
May you like
Almost.
