Chapter 17 - Victoria Finally Tells the Truth

—
Arthur showed the messages to Rebecca without replying.
Rebecca immediately forwarded screenshots to Ortiz.
The interview with Ronan paused.
Prosecutor Calder came into the observation room.
"Do not negotiate with her yourself."
Arthur stared at the message.
"She has evidence of my wife's crash."
"And she may be using it to bargain."
"Then bargain."
Calder's expression stayed controlled.
"That is not how this works."
Arthur stood.
"I have spent three years believing Elena lost control of her car for no reason. I spent three years married to the woman Ronan says was driving the vehicle in front of her. Do not tell me to be patient because your process is uncomfortable with urgency."
Rebecca stepped between the tone and the consequences.
"Arthur."
He stopped.
She turned to Calder.
"He is not asking you to promise immunity. He is asking law enforcement to secure evidence that may disappear."
Calder nodded once.
"That part we agree on."
Ortiz came in.
"Victoria left the hotel where her attorney placed her."
Arthur looked at her.
"How long ago?"
"Forty minutes."
"Do you know where she is?"
"Her phone is moving."
Arthur looked at the message again.
"Can you track it?"
Ortiz gave him a look that meant she would not discuss methods.
"We are locating her."
Another message arrived.
NOT THE POLICE STATION.
Then: ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH. SIDE CHAPEL. ONE HOUR.
Arthur knew the church.
He and Elena had married there.
Ethan had been baptized there.
Victoria knew that too.
Arthur felt anger at the choice of location.
"She's turning this into theater."
Ortiz read the message.
"Or choosing a place she assumes Daniel will avoid."
"Why would Daniel avoid a church?"
"He may not. But she may believe public cameras and people make it safer."
Calder made the decision.
"We treat it as evidence recovery and a possible surrender. No promises beyond physical safety and communication with her attorney."
Arthur said, "I'm going."
"No," Ortiz replied.
"She asked for me."
"She did not actually say that."
Arthur looked at the screen.
Victoria had written only a place and time.
He realized Ortiz was right.
His mind had inserted himself because he assumed every message was aimed at him personally.
Daniel had taught all of them to think that way.
Ortiz continued.
"You stay here or go home to your children."
Arthur's instinct was to argue.
Then he remembered Ethan sitting in the hallway at three in the morning because he believed he had to guard Maya.
Arthur chose home.
"Call me when you have the video."
"When I can."
Marcus drove Arthur and Rebecca back.
Caroline had ordered pizza for the children.
The smell felt almost absurdly normal.
Ethan ran to Arthur.
"Did the gray man tell you?"
Arthur crouched.
"He told the police things they needed to know."
"About Mom?"
Arthur hesitated.
He would not lie.
But he would not put crash details on an eight-year-old.
"He confirmed that people were following your mom before her accident."
Ethan's face tightened.
"Victoria?"
Arthur felt Rebecca watching him.
"The police are still working out everyone's part."
Ethan looked unconvinced.
"You know more."
Arthur sighed.
"I do."
"Then why can't I?"
Arthur sat on the floor beside him.
"Because knowing everything at once can hurt, and being your dad means I have to decide what you are ready to carry."
Ethan looked toward Maya.
"She isn't ready."
"No."
"Am I?"
Arthur thought carefully.
"You're ready to know that your mom was trying to protect you."
Ethan's eyes filled.
"From Victoria?"
Arthur answered slowly.
"From adults who were making dangerous choices. Victoria was one of them."
Ethan nodded.
That was enough for now.
At 6:04 p.m., Ortiz called.
Arthur moved to the kitchen.
"Do you have her?"
"Yes."
"The drive?"
"Yes."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"Is it real?"
"We have not completed forensic validation."
He almost smiled despite himself.
"Of course you haven't."
Ortiz ignored the comment.
"Victoria surrendered it voluntarily."
"What did she want?"
"Protection and the opportunity to make a proffer through counsel."
"Immunity?"
"She asked. No one promised it."
Arthur leaned against the counter.
"Did she admit she was driving?"
Ortiz paused.
"Yes."
Arthur's knees weakened.
He sat down.
He had expected the answer.
Hearing it still felt different.
"What exactly did she say?"
"I cannot give you the entire interview yet."
"Give me enough."
Ortiz considered.
"She says Daniel ordered her to slow in front of Elena. She says she refused twice. She says he threatened to expose her role in the trust theft and send her to prison. She says she then braked harder than she intended because she panicked when Elena tried to pass."
Arthur stared at the table.
"And Elena crashed."
"Yes."
"Then Victoria went to the hospital and lied for three years."
"Yes."
"Then married me."
"Yes."
Arthur laughed once, but the sound was broken.
"How does a person do that?"
Ortiz did not answer.
There was no investigative language for that kind of betrayal.
Arthur asked, "Why did she take the video now?"
"She said she saw Ronan's arrest reported through a private contact and realized he would tell us where the backup was."
"So she got there first."
"Yes."
"To save herself."
"Partly."
"What is the other part?"
"She says Daniel sent her a photograph this morning of Ethan leaving the house with Caroline last week."
Arthur went cold.
"A threat."
"She interpreted it that way."
"So suddenly she found a conscience."
Ortiz's voice stayed measured.
"People cooperate for mixed reasons. We do not need to admire them to use truthful evidence."
Arthur looked toward the living room where Ethan was helping Maya pick pepperoni off her pizza.
"Is Daniel under arrest?"
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because being awful is not an arrest warrant. We are assembling charges that hold."
"You have Ronan. Victoria. The forged evaluation. The stalking. The trust records."
"And we are moving."
Arthur heard something in her voice.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Ortiz paused.
"Daniel's office is empty."
Arthur stood.
"What?"
"He did not appear for two client meetings this afternoon. His home staff say he left with luggage."
"He's running."
"Possibly."
Arthur clenched his jaw.
"Do not say possibly."
"Arthur."
He stopped.
"We have alerts in place."
"Does he know Victoria surrendered?"
"We don't know."
Arthur looked toward the windows.
For the first time, he understood why Victoria might have chosen a public church rather than a hotel.
Daniel was losing control.
That could make him more dangerous.
Marcus came into the kitchen.
"Security team just flagged a car circling the block."
Arthur's pulse jumped.
"What car?"
"Black sedan. No plate match yet."
Ortiz heard him.
"Keep everyone inside. I'm sending a unit."
The sedan passed again.
Marcus's team captured the plate.
It belonged to a rental company.
The vehicle turned away before police arrived.
Arthur watched through the camera feed.
He hated that the children could still be part of the pressure campaign.
At 8:16 p.m., Ortiz called again.
"We validated the first portion of the dashcam file."
Arthur sat beside Rebecca, who had stayed.
"What does it show?"
"Ronan's SUV following Elena. The silver sedan ahead. The braking sequence. Elena's swerve. The crash."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"Can you identify Victoria?"
"Not from the driving footage alone."
"Then Daniel will say Ronan and Victoria invented the rest."
"There is more."
Arthur opened his eyes.
"The dashcam keeps recording after Ronan stops."
Ortiz's voice became quieter.
"Daniel and Victoria exit the silver sedan. Their faces are visible."
Arthur said nothing.
"Victoria approaches Elena's car first. Daniel pulls her back."
Arthur felt a strange, furious ache.
"Then?"
"Daniel opens the passenger side and removes a red folder."
"Ronan told you that."
"Yes. The video confirms it."
"Anything else?"
Ortiz paused.
"He also removes a digital recorder."
Arthur gripped the phone.
"Can you identify it?"
"Not precisely."
"What happens next?"
"The delivery truck driver appears. Daniel moves away from Elena's car. Victoria stays near the barrier."
"Does she help Elena?"
"The angle is poor."
Arthur exhaled sharply.
Ortiz continued.
"Then Daniel returns to the silver sedan."
"And leaves?"
"Not immediately."
There was something in her tone again.
"What does he do?"
"He opens the red folder."
Arthur waited.
"A document falls out."
"What document?"
"We cannot read it from the video."
"Then why does it matter?"
"Because there is a photograph clipped to it."
Arthur frowned.
"Of what?"
Ortiz sent a still image to his secure email.
Arthur opened it.
The picture was grainy but visible.
Daniel held a page in one hand.
A photograph hung from the paperclip.
Arthur enlarged it.
His breath stopped.
The photograph showed four-year-old Victoria standing beside a much younger Elena.
Behind them stood Elena's father, Richard Vaughn.
And Daniel Mercer's father.
Arthur stared at the image.
"They knew each other as children."
Ortiz replied, "It appears so."
Arthur looked at the date printed on the bottom of the photograph.
It was nearly thirty years old.

The story had started long before Elena ever met Arthur.
