Chapter 12 - THE ORDER

I reached my mother's house twelve minutes later.

Marcus was standing on the porch with his attorney.

A county deputy waited beside them holding paperwork.

Leo was upstairs.

My mother stood in the doorway and refused to move.

"You are not taking him."

Marcus looked past her.

"Mom, please don't make this worse."

My mother was not his mother.

He knew that.

Using the word was deliberate.

He wanted the deputy to hear family tenderness instead of threat.

I pushed through the gate.

"What order?"

Vale handed Claire, who had arrived seconds behind me, a stamped document.

She read it once.

Then again.

Her expression darkened.

"This was signed by Judge Whitaker."

"Our hearing was before Judge Landon."

Vale shrugged.

"Emergency duty judge."

"On what new evidence?"

"A report that Sarah attempted to remove Leo from the state."

I stared at him.

"I did what?"

Vale produced a screenshot.

It appeared to be an airline reservation in my name.

Two seats.

Charlotte to Boston.

Departure the following morning.

Passenger two: Leo Hale.

I laughed because the lie was so brazen.

"That is fake."

The deputy shifted uncomfortably.

Vale continued.

"The court did not find it amusing."

Claire took out her phone.

"I'm calling Judge Landon's clerk."

Marcus stepped toward the door.

"The order is valid until somebody changes it."

My mother blocked him.

"Over my dead body."

The deputy intervened.

"Ma'am, please don't do that."

Everything could have exploded there.

That was what Marcus wanted.

A shouting match.

Resistance to lawful authority.

Another scene he could describe later as evidence that my family was unstable.

I touched my mother's shoulder.

"Move."

She turned on me.

"Sarah -"

"Move."

My voice broke.

"We do this legally."

Marcus smiled.

I saw it.

Just for a second.

Then he hid it.

The deputy allowed us ten minutes to prepare Leo.

I went upstairs with my mother.

Leo was sitting beneath the window with his bear.

He knew something was wrong.

Children always knew.

"Am I going with Dad?"

I knelt in front of him.

Every part of me wanted to say no.

I could not.

"There is a court order saying you have to go with him tonight."

His face emptied.

"No."

"Leo -"

"No."

He backed into the wall.

"I don't want to."

My mother started crying.

I forced myself to stay steady.

"Claire is trying to get the order changed."

"The police know what is happening."

"You are not alone."

"Can I stay with you?"

The question nearly killed me.

"I am going to keep fighting for that."

He shook his head harder.

"Dad said if I told, people would leave."

My blood went cold.

"When did he say that?"

Leo looked down.

I stopped myself before asking more.

"You can tell the interviewer next time."

"Right now I need you to remember something."

He looked at me.

"None of this is your job to fix."

"You do not have to protect grown-ups."

"If you feel scared, you tell the deputy, your teacher, the police, or any safe adult."

He nodded slowly.

Then he opened the back of his stuffed bear.

The stitches I had cut were still loose.

He reached inside and pulled out a folded scrap of paper.

I stared at it.

"What is that?"

"Mom put two things in there."

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"She said the paper was only if Dad got me back."

My mother covered her mouth.

Leo handed it to me.

Rachel's handwriting filled one side.

LEO - IF DAD TAKES YOU HOME BEFORE SARAH FINDS THE TRUTH, GO TO YOUR CLOSET.

BOTTOM LEFT CORNER.

DO NOT OPEN IT UNLESS YOU ARE WITH A SAFE GROWN-UP.

I read it twice.

Marcus's house.

Leo's closet.

Something was still hidden there.

And now Marcus was about to take him directly to it.

I photographed the note.

Then gave the original back to Leo.

"Keep it in the bear."

He did.

"Do not go looking for anything by yourself."

"Okay."

"Promise me."

"I promise."

Downstairs, Marcus waited beside the deputy.

Leo came down holding my mother's hand.

When Marcus saw him, his entire face changed.

He knelt.

"Hey, buddy."

Leo stopped three feet away.

Marcus opened his arms.

Leo did not move.

The silence became painful.

Finally Marcus stood.

"Let's go home."

Leo looked at me.

I nodded because I had no legal alternative.

Marcus took his backpack.

Then reached for the bear.

Leo jerked away.

The deputy noticed.

"Let him keep it."

Marcus forced a smile.

"Of course."

Before they reached the car, Detective Ortiz pulled up.

He stepped out fast.

"Hold on."

Vale sighed.

"Detective, we have a valid order."

"I know."

Ortiz walked to the deputy and showed him something on his phone.

The deputy read it.

His eyebrows rose.

Marcus's expression tightened.

"What now?"

Ortiz looked at him.

"Nothing that changes custody tonight."

My heart sank.

"Then why are you here?"

"Because Mr. Hale's home is currently being searched under warrant."

Marcus went still.

"You cannot take an eight-year-old into an active search scene."

Vale opened his mouth.

Ortiz cut him off.

"The order says Leo is released to his father's custody."

"It does not require they sleep at that residence."

The deputy nodded.

Marcus stared at Ortiz.

"Where exactly do you suggest I take my son?"

"Anywhere lawful and safe that is not an active search scene."

Marcus smiled coldly.

"We'll go to a hotel."

My pulse spiked.

A hotel meant fewer witnesses.

Ortiz seemed to have the same thought.

"Child services will need the location."

"Fine."

Marcus guided Leo toward his car.

Then Leo stopped.

"My school bag."

"It's in the car, buddy."

"No."

"My other one."

My mother looked confused.

I was not.

Leo was buying time.

Or Rachel had taught him to.

We found the bag in the upstairs bedroom.

Inside was nothing but school papers.

But while Marcus waited downstairs, Leo whispered to me.

"Mom said the closet thing has a camera."

I felt my breath stop.

"A camera?"

He nodded.

"She said it watched the stairs."

Every thought in my head vanished except one.

Rachel had recorded the staircase.

Maybe not on her phone.

Maybe on another device.

Maybe the final minutes existed somewhere inside Marcus's house.

I walked downstairs with Leo's bag.

Ortiz was still there.

I did not speak.

I handed him my phone with the photograph of Rachel's note open.

He read it.

His eyes changed.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"Mr. Hale."

Marcus paused beside the door.

"What?"

"You and Leo will need to remain here a little longer."

Vale stepped forward.

"Why?"

Ortiz showed him a fresh message on his own phone.

"Because the search team found a concealed compartment in Leo's closet."

Marcus's face turned gray.

May you like

"And inside it," Ortiz continued, "they found a camera receiver."
