Chapter 2: The Promise That Stopped the System

"No."

Lucas's voice was calm.

But it carried enough certainty to silence everyone in the room.

Daniel looked at him carefully.

"Lucas... Child Services will arrive within an hour."

"I know."

"They already have emergency orders."

Lucas nodded once.

"So we'll give them a better option."

Emma frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Lucas walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at the sea of lights stretching across Manhattan.

"I spent twenty years waiting for someone to choose me."

He turned back.

"I'm not making you wait another night."

Daniel understood immediately.

"You want to become their guardian?"

"I want them to stay together."

Daniel hesitated.

"It's not that simple."

"They'll investigate your background."

"They'll inspect the penthouse."

"They'll question your motives."

Lucas smiled faintly.

"Good."

"They should."

Emma watched him carefully.

"You'd really do that... for people you met tonight?"

Lucas looked directly at her.

"No."

"I'd do it for four girls who already believe nobody ever will."

Silence filled the room.

Then Hannah slowly walked across the carpet.

She reached for Lucas's hand.

Very carefully.

As though she expected it to disappear.

He didn't move.

He simply let her tiny fingers wrap around his.

Moments later, the elevator doors opened.

Two Child Services officers entered.

Their expressions softened when they saw the girls together.

"We're here for Emma, Rose, Lily, and Hannah."

Lucas stepped forward.

"I'm requesting emergency kinship guardianship."

One officer blinked.

"You're family?"

Lucas shook his head.

"No."

"I'm trying to become one."

The officers exchanged surprised glances.

One of them smiled slightly.

"It won't be easy."

Lucas answered without hesitation.

"Neither was surviving foster care."

"For them..."

"I'll do both."

For the first time that night...

Emma allowed herself to believe that impossible things could happen.
