Chapter 4: One Last Conversation

Late that evening, Damien requested one meeting.
Sophia agreed.
Not because she still loved him.
Because she believed every ending deserved honesty.
They met in the mansion's empty library.
He looked exhausted.
"I loved you."
Sophia met his eyes.
"I believe you."
"But love without respect isn't love."
Damien lowered his head.
"I made one mistake."
She shook hers gently.
"No."
"You revealed who you truly were."
She slid a small envelope across the table.
Inside were the divorce papers.
"I signed them this afternoon."
His hands trembled.
"You planned everything?"
"I hoped I would never need any of it."
A long silence filled the room.
Finally Damien whispered,
"If I had stopped my hand that morning..."
Sophia answered quietly,
"We would probably still be married."
She stood.
"And you would still have had a future."
She walked away without looking back.
