Chapter 5 â A New Home, A New Beginning

One year later, our home felt completely different.
Laughter replaced silence.
Our daughter took her first steps across the living room while Anna clapped and laughed harder than I had ever seen.
The woman who once whispered every sentence now sang while making breakfast.
She smiled without checking who was watching.
One afternoon she found the tiny scar on her handâthe one from that freezing night in the kitchen.
She traced it with her thumb before looking at me.
"I used to hate this scar."
I kissed her hand.
"What do you see now?"
She smiled.
"The day my life finally changed."
Outside, our daughter giggled as she chased bubbles across the backyard.
Inside, there was peace.
I once believed protecting my family meant keeping everyone together.
I was wrong.
