Chapter 1: The Recording That Changed Everything
Vanessa's confidence evaporated the moment she looked up at the tiny black security camera mounted above the hospital door.
"No..." she whispered.
Her voice barely escaped her lips.
Lena's father folded his hands behind his back.
"The maternity ward upgraded its security system last month," he said calmly. "Video. Audio. Every second."
Ethan's breathing became uneven.
He knew exactly what the recording contained.
Vanessa forcing her way into the room.
The assault.
His own attempt to excuse it.
The nurses exchanged uneasy glances as hospital security entered with two uniformed officers.
One officer addressed Vanessa.
"Ma'am, we'll need you to come with us."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"You can't be serious."
Before anyone answered, Lena's father removed his phone from his pocket.
"I've already forwarded the footage to my attorneys."
He looked directly at Ethan.
"And to the board of Carter Holdings."
Ethan's eyes widened.
"What?"
"You thought I didn't know about the company."
Silence.
"For six months, I've watched you use my daughter's trust to build your own fortune."
Ethan shook his head.
"Sir, this is a misunderstanding."
"No."
Lena's father placed another envelope on the bedside table.
"This is."
Inside were copies of the "routine financial paperwork" Ethan had asked Lena to sign.
Only now every fraudulent clause had been highlighted in red.
The documents would have transferred Lena's shares, voting rights, and inheritance into Ethan's control if she had signed.
Lena slowly looked at her husband.
"So that was the plan."
Ethan couldn't meet her eyes.
Vanessa suddenly exploded.
"This wasn't supposed to happen!"
The room became deathly quiet.
She had said exactly the wrong thing.
One of the officers slowly closed the folder.
"Thank you," he said.
"That statement has been noted."
For the first time in years, Ethan realized he wasn't losing an argument.
He was losing everything.
