Chapter 4: The Audit

The beautiful thing about Protocol 7 was that it wasn't just a defensive move; it was a forensic audit. For three years, I had played the quiet, submissive wife, letting Brendan think he was a genius businessman. In reality, I was quietly gathering a paper trail of every fraudulent expense, every kickback, and every offshore account he and his mother had set up using my company's name.
Arthur, my brilliant VP of Legal, had handed that neat little folder to the IRS and the FBI.
They didn't even get to leave my penthouse building before the sirens wailed. I stood by my floor-to-ceiling windows and watched the scene unfold on the street below. Black SUVs swarmed the lobby entrance.
Brendan was dragged out first, his hands cuffed behind his back, screaming for his mother. Diane followed moments later, sobbing uncontrollably as a federal agent pushed her into the back of a cruiser.

They were being indicted for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion. Jessica wasn't safe either; she’d been picked up at a casino in Nevada trying to pawn Diane's stolen (and company-insured) jewelry.
As the police cars drove away, taking the trash out of my life for good, I felt the baby kick again. This time, it wasn't out of shock. It felt like a high-five.
