Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden in the Pantry

After the house finally became quiet, Marcus drove Maya and Lily to the emergency room.

Lily was diagnosed with severe influenza and dehydration.

The pediatrician frowned.

"She should have been brought in yesterday."

Marcus squeezed Maya's hand.

She couldn't even meet his eyes.

"I'm sorry..."

"For what?" he asked.

"I couldn't keep up."

The words broke his heart.

Later that evening, Marcus returned home alone to clean the kitchen.

While emptying the pantry, he noticed something strange.

Several grocery bags filled with expensive food had never been opened.

The refrigerator was nearly empty.

Then he checked the security cameras.

His jaw tightened.

Every morning, Brenda and Rachel loaded groceries into Rachel's SUV before leaving to shop.

Every afternoon they returned with takeout—for themselves.

Meanwhile, Maya was left with leftovers, dirty dishes, laundry, and a sick child.

Brenda hadn't come to help.

She had come to be served.

Marcus quietly downloaded every video onto a flash drive.
