Chapter 3 – The Empire of Lies

Chapter 3 – The Empire of Lies

Neither of us moved.

The office felt impossibly small.

Julian glanced at the documents scattered across the desk.

Then he laughed.

Not nervously.

Confidently.

"You always were curious."

I held up the DNA report.

"You married me while another woman was pregnant with your child."

"It wasn't that simple."

"No?"

"You told people I was dead."

His expression hardened.

"I did what I had to do."

"For money?"

"For survival."

He walked toward the window overlooking the lake.

"You think your father would've ever accepted Claire?"

"She came from nothing."

"But you..."

He looked back at me.

"You were perfect."

"The daughter of Richard Vance."

"The key to every boardroom in Chicago."

Every word felt like another knife.

"So our marriage..."

"...was business."

"It started that way."

His silence answered everything.

Then the office television suddenly turned on.

Marcus Thorne's face appeared on the screen through the building's security system.

"You should probably come downstairs."

Julian frowned.

"What did you do?"

"I invited the truth."

The mansion doors burst open.

Federal investigators.

State police.

Financial crime agents.

Every hallway filled with flashing lights.

Marcus entered carrying several boxes.

"We've traced twelve years of fraud."

He placed photographs across the desk.

Fake companies.

Forged contracts.

Hidden bank accounts.

Insurance fraud.

Tax evasion.

Identity fraud.

Even the fake obituary had been professionally filed using forged medical records.

Julian's confidence finally disappeared.

Then Claire ran into the office carrying Ethan.

"What is happening?"

Marcus looked at her gently.

"Ma'am..."

"You've been lied to as well."

She stared at Julian.

"What?"

Marcus handed her another file.

Marriage license.

Julian and Claire.

Never legally filed.

No valid marriage.

She wasn't his wife either.

She was simply another victim.

Claire slowly stepped away from Julian.

Ethan reached toward him.

"Dad?"

Julian couldn't answer.

Police officers placed him in handcuffs.

As they led him away...

He looked back at me.

"I did love you."

I met his eyes one final time.

"No."

"You loved what I could give you."

Then he disappeared through the front doors forever
