CHAPTER 10 — THE RESPECTED DOCTOR

Daniel’s false diagnosis appeared in every hospital connected to the regional medical network.

If I entered an emergency room, doctors might treat me based on information he had invented.

They might give me medication I didn’t need or dismiss real symptoms as part of a preexisting condition.

The hospital removed the diagnosis and placed a fraud alert on my file.

But Daniel’s intention was clear.

He was still building the appearance of a natural death.

The respected doctor had become the most dangerous person in my life because he knew exactly how to make a lie look clinical.

Police issued a warrant for his arrest.

His photograph appeared across the news.

For three days, no one knew where he was.

Then I received a package.

There was no return address.

Inside was the navy anniversary jacket Daniel had worn at the airport.

It had been folded neatly.

On top rested his wedding ring.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

You could have stopped this.

No apology.

No regret.

Only blame.

Daniel still believed my refusal to remain silent had caused his downfall.

The package was processed for evidence.

Investigators traced it to a shipping center near Milwaukee, but the security cameras had been disabled.

That evening, Olivia called.

“I know where he might go.”

She told investigators about a private lake house owned by one of Daniel’s former medical school classmates.

Police found the house empty.

But Daniel had been there.

Food remained in the refrigerator. A laptop had been burned in the fireplace.

Inside a bedroom drawer, investigators found a printed copy of my divorce petition covered in handwritten notes.

Beside my request for control of the house, Daniel had written:

She takes everything.

Beside the section concerning Ethan and Sophie, he had written:

They chose her.

The notes revealed what truly enraged him.

Not the loss of Olivia.

Not the collapse of his practice.

He could not tolerate losing control of the people he believed belonged to him.

The following morning, Daniel’s attorney contacted Maya.

Daniel wanted to surrender.

He demanded three conditions.

No media.

No handcuffs in front of the hospital.

And a private meeting with me before he turned himself in.

I refused.

Maya delivered the answer.

An hour later, Daniel sent me a video.

He was seated in an unfamiliar room.

His face looked exhausted, but his voice remained calm.

“Rachel, I know you believe I’m a monster.”

I watched without responding.

“I never wanted you harmed. My father designed the financial structure. I signed documents because I was afraid of losing the practice.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Olivia meant nothing. The trip meant nothing. None of this had to happen.”

Then he said the sentence that finally ended whatever remained of my love for him.

“If you had trusted me, we could have fixed this privately.”

He still wanted my trust.

Even after using it as a weapon.

The video ended with an address.

Police surrounded the location.

It was an abandoned medical office on the west side.

Inside, they found the camera Daniel had used.

But once again, he was gone.

On the wall, he had left another message.

ASK OLIVIA ABOUT THE BABY.

Olivia went pale when investigators showed her the photograph.

She sat down slowly.

“I didn’t tell him.”

“Tell him what?” I asked.

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m pregnant.”
