Chapter 3 - THE APARTMENT KEY

Mara refused to let me go to the apartment.

I argued for exactly thirty seconds before Lily began crying and ended the discussion for me.

Four days earlier, I had been learning how to breathe through contractions.

Now two attorneys were standing in my kitchen discussing preservation notices and chain of custody while my newborn rooted against my shoulder.

Nothing about my life felt real anymore.

Nathan photographed every page in the black portfolio before moving anything.

Mara called a private investigator named Owen Price.

He arrived just after sunset, a broad-shouldered former insurance investigator with gray at his temples and a voice so quiet I had to lean forward to hear him.

He studied the address on the invoice.

"I know the property."

Nathan looked at him.

"Bennett owns it."

"A subsidiary does."

Owen tapped the paper.

"Which means tenant records should exist somewhere Daniel cannot edit."

Within an hour, Nathan had the leasing department preserve the entire file.

The tenant listed on unit 1408 was not Daniel.

It was Chloe Bennett.

My sister had used our family name instead of her own surname from a previous marriage that had ended two years earlier.

The lease had been signed five months ago.

The rent was six thousand four hundred dollars a month.

I stared at the figure.

"Chloe cannot afford that."

Mom sat beside me.

"Maybe Daniel paid it."

Nathan turned the next page.

"Not directly."

The payment account belonged to Blue Harbor Consulting.

That was the moment the affair and the accounting problem stopped being separate stories.

I felt a wave of nausea and handed Lily to Mom before I dropped her.

"He used company money to pay for their apartment."

Mara shook her head.

"We do not know that yet."

"The company paid Blue Harbor."

"That is what the invoices suggest."

"Blue Harbor paid Chloe's rent."

"That is what the lease file suggests."

Her precision irritated me until I understood why she was doing it.

Emotion was Daniel's easiest defense.

Facts were mine.

Owen left to verify the unit and building access records.

At eight forty, he called Nathan.

Daniel had entered the apartment building eleven times in the previous month.

Chloe had entered almost every day.

More importantly, Daniel had used an executive master access credential belonging to Bennett Development, not a guest pass.

"Can he get into the apartment now?" I asked.

Nathan shook his head.

"Not after today."

"What if Chloe lets him in?"

"That is her decision."

I looked at the black portfolio.

"What if he goes there to remove evidence?"

Mara answered.

"Then we document it."

I hated how legal strategy sometimes sounded like watching someone strike a match and waiting to see what burned.

At nine twelve, Chloe called Mom.

Mom answered on speaker before realizing I was still in the room.

"Mom, I need money."

Susan closed her eyes.

"Where are you?"

"It does not matter."

"Are you safe?"

"Yes."

"Then come home."

"I cannot."

I remained silent.

There was a long pause.

"Is Emma there?" Chloe asked.

Mom looked at me.

"Yes."

Another pause.

Then Chloe laughed bitterly.

"Of course she is."

I took the phone.

"What do you want?"

"I was not calling you."

"You asked if I was here."

"I need Mom."

"For money?"

Her breathing changed.

"Daniel froze the apartment account."

Mara looked up sharply.

I put the call on speaker.

"What apartment account?"

"Do not pretend you do not know."

"I know where the apartment is."

Silence.

"How?"

"You told us."

"I did not give you the address."

"Daniel did."

That was not exactly true, but I wanted to hear her reaction.

It came fast.

"That liar."

Mara wrote something on a yellow pad and pushed it toward me.

ASK WHO PAYS RENT.

"Who paid for the apartment, Chloe?"

"Daniel."

"How?"

"I do not know."

"You signed the lease."

"He handled the payments."

"Through Blue Harbor?"

The line went silent.

Mom covered her mouth.

"Chloe?"

"Who told you that name?"

My pulse accelerated.

"So you know it."

"I have seen it."

"Where?"

"On emails."

"Whose emails?"

"Daniel's."

I looked at Nathan.

He was writing quickly now.

"What did the emails say?"

"I do not know."

"You just said you saw them."

"I saw the sender name."

"Who was he emailing?"

"Some man named Greg."

Nathan stopped writing.

I knew that name too.

Gregory Hale had been Bennett Development's chief financial officer for almost six years.

He had spoken at Dad's memorial service.

He had called my father a mentor.

"Greg Hale?" I asked.

Chloe hesitated.

"I think so."

Nathan mouthed one word.

Careful.

"What did Daniel say about him?"

"Nothing."

"Chloe."

"He said Greg was helping him fix something before the ownership transfer."

My skin went cold.

"Fix what?"

"I do not know."

"You keep saying that."

"Because I do not know."

She began crying again.

"I did not ask for any of this."

Anger rose so quickly I had to stand.

"You did not ask to sleep with my husband?"

"That is not what I meant."

"You did not ask for the six-thousand-dollar apartment?"

"He said he loved me."

"That was your payment method?"

Mom whispered my name.

Mara shook her head, warning me to stop.

I could not.

"Did you know the company was paying for your life?"

"I did not know."

"Did you ever wonder why Daniel could suddenly afford an apartment, jewelry, dinners, and trips while we were preparing for a baby?"

"He told me his bonus was larger this year."

I laughed once.

"His bonus was reduced this year."

Chloe became quiet.

For the first time, I heard uncertainty rather than self-pity.

"He said Dad approved it before he died."

Nathan stood.

"What exactly did he say Harold approved?"

Chloe recognized his voice.

"Why is Nathan there?"

"Answer him."

"He said your dad approved a special incentive account for him because he was taking over more responsibility."

Nathan's face hardened.

"There was no such account."

Chloe whispered something I could not hear.

"What?"

"Then where did the money come from?"

No one answered.

A sound came through the phone.

A knock.

Chloe stopped breathing.

Another knock followed.

Three hard strikes.

"Who is that?" Mom asked.

"I do not know."

Mara motioned for Chloe to stay on the line.

I heard footsteps.

Then a man's voice, muffled through a door.

"Chloe, open up."

Daniel.

My sister whispered a curse.

"Do not open it," I said.

"You do not get to tell me what to do."

"Then use your own judgment for once."

She inhaled sharply.

Daniel knocked again.

"I know you are in there."

Chloe lowered her voice.

"He said he needed space."

I almost told her that men who needed space did not usually show up at secret apartments after nine at night.

Instead I listened.

"Why is he here?" she whispered.

Nathan answered.

"Probably because the account was frozen."

Daniel's voice came through the door again.

"We need to get some things out before tomorrow."

Mara pointed at the phone.

"Ask what things."

Chloe did not need prompting.

"What things?"

"Open the door."

"Tell me first."

"Chloe."

"No."

There was silence.

Then Daniel's voice softened.

It was the same voice he had used with me in the hospital.

"Baby, please."

Chloe's face was not visible, but I could hear her resolve weakening.

"Do not," I said.

"Shut up, Emma."

"If he wants clothes, he can tell you what clothes."

Daniel must have heard me.

His tone changed instantly.

"Are you on the phone with her?"

Chloe did not answer.

"Chloe, open the door right now."

The command made Mom stand.

"Call building security," she said.

Nathan was already dialing.

Daniel hit the door with his palm.

"She is using you."

Chloe started crying.

"You said she did not know about Blue Harbor."

Silence.

I felt every person in my kitchen stop breathing.

Daniel spoke more quietly.

"Open the door."

"You said nobody would find out."

"This is not a conversation for the hallway."

"Is the company paying for this apartment?"

No answer.

"Daniel?"

"We will talk inside."

"Answer me."

Then came the sentence that broke whatever remained between them.

"Do not start pretending you care where the money came from."

Chloe made a wounded sound.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you liked the apartment."

"You told me it was yours."

"It was available."

"You told me you bought it for us."

"I never said I bought it."

I closed my eyes.

I knew that tactic.

Daniel could take a promise, remove one verb, and make you feel foolish for hearing what he wanted you to hear.

He had done it to me in smaller ways for years.

Building security arrived before Chloe opened the door.

We heard another male voice identify himself.

Daniel immediately became polite.

He always knew which version of himself to perform.

"I am an executive with the property owner."

The guard replied that his credentials had been suspended.

For the first time, Daniel sounded genuinely stunned.

"By whom?"

"Corporate security."

"On whose authority?"

Nathan leaned toward the phone.

"Mine," I said.

There was a long silence.

Then Daniel laughed.

"You really want to do this, Emma?"

I looked at Lily sleeping against my mother's shoulder.

"I did not start this."

"You have no idea what you are doing."

"Maybe not."

I glanced at Nathan.

"But I am learning."

Daniel left without getting inside.

Chloe stayed on the phone for several minutes afterward.

Her breathing sounded shallow.

"Emma."

"What?"

"There is a safe in the bedroom closet."

Nathan looked at Mara.

"Whose?"

"Daniel's."

"What is in it?"

"I do not know."

I nearly snapped at her again, but she continued.

"He told me never to open it."

"Can he access it remotely?"

"It has a keypad."

Nathan asked for the model.

Chloe sent a photograph.

Mara looked at it.

"Do not touch it."

"I was not going to."

Then Chloe said something so quietly that I almost missed it.

"I know the code."

Everyone stared at the phone.

"How?" I asked.

"I watched him enter it once."

"Do not open it," Mara said.

"Why not?"

"Because if it contains relevant evidence, we need a lawful way to preserve it."

Chloe laughed bitterly.

"Lawful."

"Yes."

"He lied to me for six months, used stolen money to keep me in an apartment, and now I am supposed to respect his privacy?"

I answered before Mara could.

"For once, do not make the next bad decision just because someone else made the first one."

She went silent.

The words hurt me too.

At eleven thirty, building management placed an administrative lock on the unit at Nathan's request because it was owned by a company subsidiary and potentially connected to an internal fraud inquiry.

Chloe was allowed to remain overnight.

No one else could enter until counsel reviewed the lease and preservation order.

At midnight, I finally lay down beside Lily's bassinet.

I had not slept more than twenty minutes when my phone vibrated.

It was a photograph from Chloe.

The safe was open.

My stomach dropped.

She had ignored us.

Under the photograph she had typed six words.

YOU NEED TO SEE WHAT HE KEPT.

Before dawn, Chloe sent one more message from the apartment.

I AM SORRY I OPENED IT.

I did not answer.

Then she sent another.

I THINK HE WAS GOING TO LEAVE ME TOO.

That one made me sit up.

For months, Chloe had believed she was escaping my shadow with a man who finally chose her first.

Now she was learning that Daniel's promises had always been conditional.

I felt no triumph in that.

Only the bleak recognition that both of us had trusted the same talent in him.

He knew how to make a person feel uniquely understood while quietly collecting every insecurity they revealed.

I put the phone facedown.
