Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Door

The nursery door swung open.

Victoria stood there, perfectly composed, still dressed in the elegant navy dress she had worn to lunch. Her eyes moved from Emily's bleeding wrists to me, and for the first time since I had known her, I saw genuine surprise.

"Daniel..." she said carefully. "You're home early."

I stepped between her and the bed.

"Don't come any closer."

Her confident expression faltered.

"What exactly is going on?" she asked.

I pointed toward Emily.

"You tell me."

Victoria glanced at the loosened restraints.

"I can explain."

Emily's voice trembled.

"No... you can't."

Victoria shot her a warning look.

"Emily, think carefully before you start making accusations."

"I don't need to accuse you," Emily replied. "He can see what happened."

I picked up my phone.

"I'm calling the police."

Victoria took one quick step forward.

"You'll destroy this family over a misunderstanding."

I looked at her with disbelief.

"A misunderstanding doesn't leave someone tied to a bed."

She realized I wasn't backing down.

For the first time, she said nothing.

Ten minutes later, flashing lights reflected across the windows of our home.

The officers photographed the nursery, collected the torn sheets, and carefully documented Emily's injuries.

One detective quietly asked Victoria to accompany him downstairs.

As she walked away, she looked back at me.

"You don't know the whole story."
