Chapter 2 — The Basement Told the Truth

I wrapped Lily and our daughter in blankets before helping them upstairs.
Lily flinched every time she heard footsteps.
Even after I promised Vanessa would never touch her again, she kept glancing toward the basement door as if expecting my sister to appear.
"Call the police," I whispered.
Lily shook her head.
"I tried."
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?"
"She took my phone whenever you weren't calling. She said I was too emotional to make decisions. She told everyone I was having postpartum depression."
I looked at the bruises on her wrists.
"Who did this?"
She lowered her eyes.
"Vanessa grabbed me whenever I refused to stay downstairs."
Before I could answer, the front doorbell rang.
A woman stood outside holding a clipboard.
"Good afternoon. I'm Rebecca Collins with Child and Family Services."
She explained that the hospital had requested a routine wellness visit because I had suffered a serious accident while our newborn was only days old.
She smiled politely.
Until she stepped inside.
Rebecca immediately noticed the empty nursery.
"No crib?"
I couldn't answer.
Then she heard our daughter crying.
"May I see where the baby has been sleeping?"
I slowly led her downstairs.
The moment she reached the basement, her expression changed completely.
The stained mattress.
The mold creeping across the walls.
The broken space heater beside the baby's blanket.
The empty formula containers.
She crouched beside Lily.
"Mrs. Carter... how long have you been living down here?"
Lily hesitated.
Then whispered,
"Almost two weeks."
Rebecca stood up without saying another word.
She walked upstairs.
Pulled out her phone.
And dialed 911.
"This is Child and Family Services," she said calmly.
"I need officers and detectives at this address immediately. I believe I've found evidence of domestic abuse, child neglect, and unlawful confinement."
At that exact moment...
Vanessa walked through the front door carrying shopping bags.
She froze.
The police sirens were already getting closer.
For the first time since I had known my sister...
She looked afraid.
