Three weeks later, Linda entered the courthouse convinced she would walk away smiling once again.
Instead, Detective Collins approached her before the hearing began.
"You are under arrest."
Linda looked toward Jake.
He never moved.
He simply watched as officers placed handcuffs on the woman he had trusted his entire life.
Months later, Megan gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
Jake never left the delivery room.
As he held his daughter for the first time, he quietly promised himself something.
"No one will ever make you afraid in your own home."
Outside the hospital, winter snow covered the streets of Chicago.
Inside, the apartment that had once been filled with fear finally became a home again.
Jake later replaced the faded blue blanket with a handmade quilt stitched from pieces of Megan's favorite baby clothes.
