Chapter 5 - THE FAMILY AT THE HOSPITAL DOOR

Maya took my phone before I could answer Isabella.

“No.”

It was the calmest word she had spoken all day.

Priya stood and pulled the privacy curtain fully closed even though the room had a solid door.

I could hear voices outside now.

One of them was unmistakably Isabella’s.

“She is carrying my grandchild.”

A security officer answered in a low voice.

I could not make out every word.

Then Isabella raised hers.

“My son is the father.”

Maya walked into the hallway.

I heard the door shut behind her.

Priya stayed beside me.

“You do not have to see them.”

“I know.”

“Say it like you believe it.”

“I do not have to see them.”

The words felt strange in my mouth.

For three years, Morgan family decisions had arrived as facts.

Dinner was at seven.

Christmas was at Isabella’s house.

Luke was unavailable.

Vanessa would be joining us.

I had confused endurance with maturity for so long that saying no still felt rude.

The door opened.

Maya came back in.

“Luke is asking his mother to leave.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“He is downstairs arguing with her.”

“That doesn’t sound like Luke.”

“Maybe he finally found a situation he can’t control by glaring at it.”

Priya almost smiled.

The smile vanished when a nurse entered with a frightened expression.

“Mrs. Morgan, I’m sorry.”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

“There is a woman in the family waiting area telling people she is your husband’s fiancée.”

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Priya said the name for me.

“Vanessa.”

The nurse nodded.

“She is asking whether you lost the baby.”

I felt every drop of blood leave my face.

Maya moved so quickly the nurse stepped backward.

“Who told her there was any concern about the baby?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did she use Sophia’s name?”

“Yes.”

“Did she ask for medical information?”

“Yes.”

Maya’s voice became sharp.

“Get your privacy officer here now.”

The nurse hurried away.

I stared at the blanket over my knees.

Vanessa had not just followed me.

She had come to the hospital and asked whether I lost my baby.

The cruelty of it made something inside me turn hard.

“I want to see her.”

Maya looked at me.

“No.”

“I do.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to hear what she says when she has to lie to my face.”

Priya folded her arms.

“That is a terrible idea.”

“I agree.”

I swung my legs off the bed.

“I’m still doing it.”

Maya stared at me for two seconds.

Then she sighed.

“Fine.”

“But you say nothing about the pregnancy beyond what you choose.”

“I know.”

“And I am standing there.”

“Fine.”

“And if Luke appears, he does not join unless you allow it.”

“Fine.”

We met Vanessa in a small consultation room off the waiting area.

She was still wearing the camel coat.

That alone made my anger feel almost clean.

Her expression transformed when she saw me.

“Sophia.”

She stood.

“Oh my God, are you okay?”

I closed the door behind me.

“Why did you come here?”

Her eyes flicked to Maya.

“Isabella called me.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Vanessa gave me a wounded look.

“I was worried.”

“About what?”

She hesitated.

There it was.

A tiny pause.

The same kind of pause Luke noticed in Elena.

“About you.”

“Were you worried that I lost the baby?”

Her face changed.

“Who told you I asked that?”

“So you did ask.”

“I was scared.”

“How did you know there was a baby?”

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Maya stepped between her and it.

“Answer her.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“I heard Isabella talking.”

“Isabella did not know until today.”

“She suspected.”

“Try again.”

Her voice lost some of its softness.

“I don’t owe you an interrogation.”

“You followed me to the hospital.”

“I did not follow you.”

“Security has you on camera.”

That shook her.

Not much.

Enough.

“I came because Isabella asked me to see what was happening.”

Maya laughed once without humor.

“So you admit you came to gather information about Sophia’s medical treatment.”

“No.”

“You just said exactly that.”

Vanessa looked back at me.

“You are making this ugly.”

I stared at her.

“I filed for divorce yesterday.”

“You have spent years waiting for my marriage to end.”

“You sat in my house while I packed.”

“You followed me to a hospital.”

“And now I’m the one making it ugly?”

Her cheeks reddened.

“You never belonged with Luke.”

The room went silent.

Finally.

The polite mask cracked.

I felt strangely relieved.

“There she is.”

Vanessa realized what she had said and tried to recover.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Yes, it is.”

She stood straighter.

“You came into a family you never understood.”

“You changed everything.”

“You made Luke smaller.”

That one stunned me.

“Smaller?”

“He used to know who he was.”

“He used to know what mattered.”

“And then he married you and started pretending he wanted a normal life.”

I almost laughed.

“Luke has never pretended very hard.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“You have no idea what he gave up for you.”

“What did he give up?”

She opened her mouth.

Then the door opened behind us.

Luke stood there.

His face was unreadable.

Vanessa turned pale.

“How much did you hear?”

He looked at her.

“Enough.”

For the first time since Vanessa returned to Chicago, she looked afraid of him.

Luke stepped into the room and shut the door.

“Did you follow Sophia here?”

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Your mother was worried.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I came to help.”

“You asked hospital staff whether my wife lost a pregnancy you were never told about.”

The word pregnancy landed between us.

Luke had finally said it out loud.

His eyes moved to me.

He did not ask.

He knew.

I could see the exact second certainty replaced suspicion.

His face changed in a way I had never seen before.

Shock first.

Then something like pain.

Then anger.

Not at me.

At himself, maybe.

Or maybe I only wanted to believe that.

Vanessa reached for his arm.

“Luke, I was trying to protect you.”

He looked down at her hand until she removed it.

“From what?”

Vanessa did not answer.

“From my wife?”

Her jaw tightened.

Luke’s voice became colder.

“Leave.”

“Luke.”

“Now.”

She stared at him.

“You’re choosing her after she filed for divorce without telling you she’s pregnant?”

The sentence hit exactly where she intended.

Luke’s face hardened.

I felt Maya shift beside me.

But Luke did not look at Vanessa.

He looked at me.

For one awful second, I thought I saw accusation.

Then he turned back to her.

“This is not your marriage.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“It should have been.”

Nobody moved.

She realized what she had admitted too late.

Luke opened the door.

Vanessa walked past him without another word.

As she disappeared down the hallway, Luke remained by the door.

He did not come closer.

That restraint was new too.

He looked at me for a long moment.

“How far along are you?”

I could have refused.

I almost did.

“Almost five months.”

His face went blank.

“Five.”

“Yes.”

He sat down slowly in the nearest chair.

I had never seen Luke Morgan sit because his knees seemed to stop working.

“You’ve known for five months?”

“No.”

“How long?”

“Four months.”

He closed his eyes.

Four months meant four months of missed chances.

Four months of dinners he did not attend.

Four months of mornings when he left before I woke.

Four months of nights when I considered telling him and decided I would rather not be disappointed again.

When he opened his eyes, they were red around the edges.

“Were you going to tell me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

I looked at him.

“When I believed telling you would make me feel less alone.”

The answer hit him harder than shouting would have.

He lowered his gaze.

Then he asked the question I had been dreading since the hospital appointment.

“Were you going to end the pregnancy?”

The room became perfectly still.

Maya stepped closer.

I raised my hand.

This answer belonged to me.

“I went to understand my options.”

Luke’s face changed again.

“Why?”

“Because I was terrified of raising a child inside a marriage where I already felt invisible.”

His jaw clenched.

“You should have told me.”

“And you should have noticed me.”

Neither of us spoke after that.

Then the door opened again.

Elena stood there in her white coat.

She looked from me to Luke.

Her expression fell.

“You know.”

Luke stood.

“Yes.”

Elena closed the door.

Then she looked at her brother with an anger I had never seen from her.

“Good.”

“Now maybe you’ll finally ask the right question.”

Luke frowned.

“What question?”

Elena looked directly at him.

“Why was Sophia so afraid of having your child that she came to a hospital alone to discuss whether she could continue the pregnancy?”

After Vanessa left the consultation room, Luke did not follow her.

That surprised everyone, especially Vanessa.

She stopped in the hallway and looked back twice.

He stayed beside the door.

It was the first visible sign that nostalgia had finally lost some of its power over him.

Inside the room, I felt no triumph.

I only felt tired.

Luke’s attention returned to me.

His gaze dropped once toward my stomach.

He looked away immediately, almost as if looking without permission was another boundary he had just learned existed.

“How many appointments have there been?”

I hesitated.

“Four.”

His face tightened.

“You went alone?”

“Mostly.”

“Who came with you?”

“Priya once.”

“Maya once.”

“Elena knew about today.”

Luke absorbed that.

People he barely considered part of our marriage had already participated in my pregnancy more than he had.

“When was the first ultrasound?”

“Twelve weeks.”

“Was everything okay?”

“Yes.”

“Did you hear a heartbeat?”

“Yes.”

His eyes changed.

“What was it like?”

The question caught me off guard.

I had expected him to demand records.

Instead, he asked for a memory.

“It sounded too fast.”

“I thought something was wrong.”

“The technician laughed and told me that was normal.”

Luke smiled faintly.

“I would have thought the same thing.”

I hated the ease of that shared thought.

It reminded me of the marriage we might have had in another version of our lives.

He looked at his hands.

“Do you have a picture?”

“Yes.”

“Can I see it?”

“No.”

Pain crossed his face.

“Okay.”

I almost changed my answer out of guilt.

Then I stopped myself.

His disappointment was not an emergency I had to fix.

That was another lesson.

Elena entered later and found Luke still sitting quietly.

She looked suspicious.

“You’re still here.”

“Sophia hasn’t asked me to leave.”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

I nearly laughed.

Luke looked at his sister.

“I know how that sounds.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“Progress.”

He ignored the sarcasm.

When I was discharged, he offered to have a driver take me anywhere I wanted.

I declined.

He did not repeat the offer.

As Maya wheeled me toward the private elevator, I looked back once.

Luke remained in the hallway.

He was holding nothing.

Not my medical chart.

Not an ultrasound photograph.

Not an answer he had forced from anyone.

May you like

For the first time, he had left a hospital with less information than he wanted.

And the world had not ended.
