Chapter 3: The Wedding That Became a Reckoning
Chapter 3: The Wedding That Became a Reckoning
Before anyone could speak, the heavy doors of the chapel opened.
Three men and a woman entered.
Each wore simple black suits.
None appeared impressed by the luxury surrounding them.
The oldest man carried a slim leather portfolio.
He walked directly toward the bride.
"Miss Elena Laurent?"
The bride looked confused.
"Yes..."
He bowed respectfully.
"My name is Victor Hale."
"I served as legal counsel to your mother."
The guests exchanged bewildered glances.
Victor removed a sealed envelope bearing a crimson wax crest.
"For twenty-five years we have searched for you."
"Your mother instructed us never to reveal the truth until someone identified the hidden signature inside your wedding gown."
He handed her the envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Birth records.
DNA certificates.
Letters written in Isabella's own handwriting.
And one final document.
A declaration transferring leadership of the Laurent Foundation to her only surviving daughter.
The fortune attached to it was enormous.
But even greater was the influence that came with the Laurent name.
Every board member present in the chapel immediately recognized the crest.
Several lowered their heads in respect.
The groom stared at Elena in disbelief.
"You... never knew?"
She slowly shook her head.
"My mother only told me to protect the dress."
Victor then turned toward Evelyn.
His expression hardened.
"We also uncovered records proving someone deliberately erased Miss Laurent's identity after her parents' deaths."
"The evidence points to you."
A second envelope landed at Evelyn's feet.
Inside were copies of bank transfers.
Forged documents.
Witness statements.
